Personality: Subaru was born in Kyoto and is the younger of the twins pair he forms with his sister Hokuto. He is a member of the Sumeragi family, a prestigious clan of onmyōji at the service of the Emperor since centuries. One of its mission is to keep the equilibrium in Japan's spiritual energies. More specifically, the Sumeragis are the masters of the good energies.
Raised by his grandmother, Lady Sumeragi, Subaru is aware since his youngest age that he will become the next Head of the family. Though the education he receives is very strict, he always does what is asked of him with a great sense of duty and respect towards the Sumeragis' mission. He also reveals huge talents in onmyōdō and exorcism.
But Subaru is far from being an unhappy child. He is extremely close to his sister Hokuto, a very lively and cheerful girl. She likes to tease her brother but she also is his confidant and it is very difficult to separate them. They adore each other and, rare fact with male and female twins, their resemblance is stunning. Without parents, they protect and take care of each other, almost living in their own secret world.
Since his youngest age, Subaru also shows a great kindness towards people (alive or dead) and animals. It is shown when he once finds a puppy in the street and prefers to be beaten by other boys than giving them the dog for them to 'play with'. This kindness is also the cause of Subaru's tragic destiny.
At the age of 9, Subaru is sent to Tokyo for one year. During this period, he is intensively trained to officially become the 13th Head of the Sumeragis. The separation with his sister is extremely difficult for the twins but both show a strong will by accepting it, knowing how important and necessary it is for the future of their clan. This is during this special year that Subaru meets the one who permanently changes his life.
On the day of his first mission as exorcist, Subaru ventures to Ueno park where he meets Sakurazuka Seishirou, the Sakurazukamori. Fascinated by the boy's beauty and kindness (Subaru is not afraid of the murdered but wonders if his victims feel pain and still suffer after their death), Seishirou makes a bet with him : they'll spend one year together and if he is unable to love Subaru at the end of it, he'll kill him. The Sakurazukamori then puts his mark on the boy, inverted pentagrams magically carved on the back of his hands, and erases this memory from Subaru's head. From then on, Subaru wears gloves that only him can remove.
Subaru and Seishirou meet again seven years later when the teenager is living in Tokyo with Hokuto, working as a talented exorcist while following school. Subaru has become a very serious and shy person but he can also be extremely happy and cheerful, exactly like his sister.
The trio spends most of the time together (Seishirou posing as a veterinarian) and as the months pass, it becomes evident that Subaru is falling in love with their older friend and is devastated when Seishirou loses an eye when protecting him from a mad woman. Consumed by guilt and sadness, Subaru falls into a catatonic state when Seishirou reveals him his true identity and that the bet is over. Wanting to protect her brother, Hokuto will take his place in a last confrontation with Seishirou. She is killed by the Sakurazukamori but not without casting an extremely powerful spell on him : if Seishirou once tries to attack Subaru with the same technique he used on Hokuto, it will turn against him and he'll be killed by the young man.
After the death of his adored sister, unable to forget his love for Seishirou, Subaru becomes a very sad and lonely man. He stops wearing the gloves but starts smoking, a way for him to try to become closer to the Sakurazukamori. Not forgetting his job but seemingly detached from his obligation toward the Sumeragis, he spends the next years in loneliness, his life being almost ascetic.

Subaru is a member of the Dragons of Heaven (or Seven Seals) who are the protector of humanity and Seishirou is one of the Dragons of Earth (Seven Angels) who want to destruct it so the Earth can be saved.

His empathy for the teenager is the start of a deep friendship between the two of them but it is not enough for Subaru to get over his obsession for Seishirou. But then, the last confrontation between Subaru and Seishirou comes. Emotionally intense, it reveals the true feelings Seishirou has for the young man as he activates Hokuto's spell, giving his life for Subaru but also sealing a dreadful destiny for him, making him the next Sakurazukamori.
In conclusion, Subaru has gone from an innocent, happy and lively child to a guilt-ridden, sad and lonely young man worrying more for the others than for his own well-being. Unable to hate the one who destructed his life, he shows that he is full of love and that those feelings are more important than all the sufferings he went through.

Used as a protective field during a fight, anything that is damaged inside of it is restored to normal once the battle is over. If the summoner is seriously harmed or killed, the kekkai disappears.
Subaru's kekkai has the shape of a pentagram, a symbol he often uses in his magic.

And there was the smell too. Sweetish and metallic at the same time, leaving a taste of copper in his mouth. Blood. Red, sticky blood dripping from the fingers of that shadow hiding under the cherry tree. And its face, its face was... was...

This dream had been with him for many years now but recently, it always stopped before he could see the shadow's face. It left him totally lost, frustrated and, strangely, immensely sad. He knew this was important but he was unable to understand or remember why.
If only, if only his double, his dear sister could be with him. Where was she, why didn't she save him from this place ? Subaru tried to say her name but it escaped him once more, like if the thought of it was dead before it could form into his head.
"Sister, don't leave me here..." The words were lost into a strangled sob. He couldn't cry. He had to be strong if he wanted to survive, to find her again.
