Protest the Circus

We all know that the Circus isn't the nicest place for animals. Elephants, tigers, primates, horses, dogs....are all beaten, hooked, tasered, and abused for the sake of entertainment.

Boycott the Circus!

If any of you live in or near UpState NY and would be interested in joining a protest against Cole Bros. Circus, please leave me a comment.

Dog on Death Row

Congo, the 2 year old German Shepherd is on "Doggy Death Row" for attacking a gardener.
The gardeners allowed themselves onto the property an hour earlier than expected. Scared by the dogs, one of the gardeners grabbed the dog's owner and used her as a shield to hide from the dog. The dog was fine with the gardener, until he grabbed his mother.
ANY dog who sees a stranger grab their owner will help their owner.

The dog is now being held at a shelter waiting for court to decide his fate.

Please read and watch the article:
http://wcbstv.com/local/german.she…

Please write to the court and talk them out of putting Congo down.

My Sick Mice

I have 4 mice that I love dearly. My two oldest mice: Starlet and Zoe are almost 3 years old (which is their life expectancy).
Ever since I had Zoe she has had bald patches all over her. They aren't parasites because Starlet would have gotten them. She was always active and healthy with a hearty appetite, so I never thought anything of it. Over a week ago I found tumors on Zoe. It was like they grew overnight. She is still walking around and being herself, so I'm assuming that she isn't in any pain, but it is still terribly sad. She is losing more hair as the days pass and the tumor is getting bigger.

Then today I went to clean their pen and I was shocked when I saw Starlet. She was fine yesterday, but today when I saw her, her head and front half was regular sized, but her abdomen was extremely bloated and large. It looks to me like she has internal tumors. And on her right rear leg she has a hairless, bright red, moist looking tumor. Unlike Zoe, Starlet isn't well. She isn't acting like herself, she is having a hard time climbing, and she can't reach into the food bowl. I supplied her with a bunch of Cheerios. I normally give them as a rare treat, but if the both of them are passing away, I might as well give them whatever they want for their final days.

I am really devastated. I love them so much and I've had them a long time. It's not like they're dying of old age in their sleep - they're dying full of painful tumors.

So I went to this really sweet farm that uses almost no combustible/fossil fuel energy.

It uses wind power and solar panels for energy. Well, what are some of the problems with wind energy: bird migration, needs a certain rotation speed to gather energy. Problems with solar power: the sun needs to be out, upkeep and both wind and solar energy are difficult to store because of capacitors/batteries.

What's awesome is this farm virtually REMOVES all of the negative aspects of wind and solar energy (birds are still able to get hurt, but because the blades are smaller than the average windmill, it's less likely). You might asking yourself: how the hell do they do that?

Answer: reverse hydrogen fuel cells. Instead of using a fuel cell and water to create energy, the farm uses energy to create and store hydrogen gas. Then the two farmers (and one guy who is an accoutant and has NO engineering degree) converted almost all of their equipment to use hydrogen by removing the carbeurator and adding a few things. He ran a generator inside a building with no release of carbon dioxide. It was freaking sweet.

And to add to that, the windmills do not have to rotate at a higher rate to begin making hydrogen. So they will run on less windy days. And if it is nightime and there is no wind, the buildings and the center and the air conditioning all run on the saved hydrogen.

Dull Homestead is the name of the farm. The entire package for installation for one house is 64,000. Yes, it's expensive, but how much in 30 years do we all spend on gasoline, methane, etc. And if they get better at making solar panels (which they are continually improving), this is really the future of energy in the world!

Some of you guys might be interested in reading this opinion piece. It basically outlines why current environmentalist tactics are failing to gain support from a wider audience/bolster our base.

You might be suprised what the article points to as the problems with modern environmentalism. (just to forewarn: it's not anti-environmentalism and is in fact trying to give solutions to get real changes to happen. Also, if you are right-wing, conservative, libertarian, etc. you might be offended by the very obvious bias of this 2 year old opinion piece. Just ignore that and try to see the message that the authors are portraying).

I might have posted this before, but I finally got around to reading it (it's required for my program).

After you read it yourself...Collapse )

I came here to vent because I know this is a safe place to do so. But if it's over-the-top, then I don't mind a deletion.

My venting involves a guinea pig community that I am part of (I don't really wish to name because I don't want to start a flame war or something). But on this community, it's CLEARLY STATED that they are OPPOSED to breeding and buying animals.

Now someone makes a post, that in truth, is not a wank post by itself. But the entire theme revolves around breeding and showing cavies. I tried very hard not to be rude because the person was not being rude in their initial post. So when one other user and myself make comments regarding WHY we are against excessive breeding, including humans, and the person that makes the post argues with me about why my reasons are not valid, I wonder why on earth did they make the post in the first place if they did not want to hear other people's opinions? Espcially on a community that does not support the debate in the first place. There is no debate according to this community.

I don't think it's fair to tell people to be against breeding and buying of pets and then turn around and have 2 or 3 or 4 children of their own. But I wasn't saying cull animals or cull human babies or sterilize people. I was just making the comparison that it's ironic and hypocritical to be for one and against the other when the reason and the motives are the same: there are far to many animals/human children that do not have homes because of overbreeding.

I think it's so arrogant to act like humans don't have to be responsible for their environmental actions just because we have our own reasons for wanting offspring. Again, I'm not saying that people should be barred from having children or that people who adopt are untouchable gods. But is it too much to ask for people not to jump down my throat or say I'm comparing companion animals (pets) to humans when I say overpopulation is inherent in humans as well?

Geese

I read an article that a neighboring town was searching for a way to get rid of all the geese. The local "Big Wigs" wanted to have them "exterminated", but the mayor said he found killing the geese cruel and unnecessary. He said that he geese deserved to live just as much as we did. WAY TO GO!
Some A-hole also had the bright idea, according to the article, to steal the eggs before they hatched, or to use herding dogs to "shoo" them away.

I know this is a community and I should try to be more appropriate, but I have PMS and this is what I have to say:

To the Jerks wanting to exterminate the Geese:

Hey assholes! You're not the only ones on the planet! I know it's hard to get through your stupid fucking heads, but we have to co-exist on this planet with MANY differet species. Awww you don't like goose poop? Well I can bet you a million dollars that they don't appreciate all the habitat destruction and water pollution that we force not only on ourselves, but on every other fucking creature around. Who cares if the geese fucking shit on your lawn? We fucking shit on everything they have as it is, so shut your whiney fucking mouths.

It infuriates me that so many people are absolutely intolerable towards animals. Godforbid they try to survive in this industrial world without being killed for their natural bodily functions. Jesus Christ.

I'm going to write the mayor a letter and thank him for being so compassionate.

carbon footprint

Ever wondered how much carbon dioxide you were actually emitting/carbon you were using? Here are two websites that can give you a rough estimate:

http://carbonfootprint.com/USA/cal…
http://www.climatecrisis.net/takea…

It's also pretty interesting because you can donate money to build cleaner sources that will "displace" (to use their word) the reliance on fossil fuels burning.

(of course, both links are just low end estimates because they don't include many of the other things we do)

Help Save Animals!

A Pet Supply Chain, Pet Supplies Plus, is considering selling animals in their stores.
Hearing this rumor, I contacted the owner of the chain and had a 10 minute conversation with him.
I was opposed to this, because animals in pet stores are never treated properly. Over half of them die during shipment, they rarely - if ever receive vet. care, and a lot of pets are sold to homes with people who will either mistreat them, or don't know enough about them to fully care for them.

I presented my points to the owner, Bob Hessling, and these were his exact quotes that I wrote down verbatim:

"I'm going to be honest with you. If we're selling a guinea pig for $25 that has a head cold, are we going to be able to afford his vet bills? Probably not. It's a wash. We won't be making any profit off of that, but that's what happens when you decide to sell animals in your establishment."

"I know you probably heard about sick animals being thrown in freezers when they're sick or dying, and who's to say that isn't a humane way to kill them? I mean, half of the people would say it is, and half of the people would say it isn't."

So already, he has stated that he won't provide vet care for sick or injured animals if the vet bills cost more than the profit he will make off of the animal, and that if he can't provide vet care, freezing them to death is an option.

I am really disgusted, and I urge as many of you as possible to send E-mails and or real letters to the store to try and persuade them NOT to begin to sell animals.
Thank you so much! I think we can make a difference for the animals.

Extended Daylight Saving Time saves energy?

Will the recent Energy Policy Act of 2005 adopted by USA, actually reduce energy consumption by extending Daylight Saving Times in a year?

FOR
"In an attempt to save energy, we sprang forward three weeks early this year, and we'll fall back a week later. A U.S. Department of Energy study predicts that extending daylight saving time will cut our electricity consumption by four-tenths of a percent per day."

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_5421166

AGAINST
"Starting daylight saving a couple of months early doesn't seem to cut energy consumption, as many of its supporters claim."
