Didn’t want to detract from the post I just reblogged so I’m making this as its own post, but.

The way I see it, the thing about “actually thinking the USA is uniquely evil is also american exceptionalism” as an expression is that, at least from what I saw in my limited perspective, it initially came in response to assertions made by americans themselves that *americans* have it uniquely bad because of how evil their country is, and consequently need to be coddled about it, even when the problem in question is not in any way unique to the USA. E.g. the myriad posts in here about how actually americans can’t be blamed for not knowing shit about the world because You Don’t Understand How Bad Our Education System Is (and then the problems they list off about their education system are like. Extremely common and even worse in the home country of the person they’re talking to).

The thing is now americans got hold of it and it has been largely recuperated into a tool for americans to tell silly foreigners that Don’t You Know Being Mad At The USA For Having Military Bases All Over Your Country And Repeatedly Sabotaging Your Local Economy Is Doing An American Exceptionalism Actually.
