shop organic cotton: under the canopy is having a sale

its august! that means that i made it three months without buying any clothes-- which, if you knew me... would speak volumes! i got really creative and had a lot of fun picking new outfits from my "old" wardrobe, and honestly... didn't miss out on anything "to die for" in the stores, anyway.

this past weekend i paraded along with many others enjoying the tax-free shopping weekend (to reward myself). let me just say; from the looks of the hoards of shoppers in potomac mills mall last saturday afternoon, this economy is not in trouble. what a hot mess of people and clothes. i felt like i was fighting the current like a salmon headed north for mating season (its a mess of an excuse for a mall).

unfortunately, nothing i bought was organic (although banana republic and bitten by sjp both had organic cotton tees -- i just wasn't personally impressed. i'm really not a tee shirt/jeans kind of girl). when i do buy something, i try to go for a timeless appeal.
however, today i was browsing online and found under the canopy... not only is their stuff cute, they are having a SALE! a really good one, too.

i really want my money to be spent supporting businesses who have decided to right by the environment. i think that being choosy as to which of these major companies get our $s will make the biggest impact. its important to know why we should support these companies, too.
here is some info from the under the canopy website that i found useful to understanding the benefit to my organic purchase.

green lipstick!

green chic book"beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. that, or a kick-ass red lipstick"- gwyneth paltrow

i was not implying you wear green lipstick. don't worry.

in the book i'm currently reading, green chic: saving the earth in style, the author, christine matheson, says that over the course of our lifetime we may eat 4 - 9 pounds of lipstick. thats frightening- and imagine the one your kissing.she says "they are often petroleum-based and contain formaldehyde in the form of preservatives such as DMDM, hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea... "etc. formaldehyde?... lipsticksthats the stinky stuff that kept those pigs ready to be dissected in your high school bio class. besides those other toxins she warns us to avoid lead acetate, in eye makeup too, because it is a neurotoxin. yikes!

in order to avoid these nasty things she suggests lavera, ecco bella (omg, not only is the birth of venus their poster child... they do chocolate, too!!), aveda (pretty well known brand), dr hauschka, plant love by cargo is sold at sephora. i want to recommend burt's bees... but since they sold out to clorox (of all places), i don't know how i feel about them anymore.

suki is another brand. it was mentioned in gorgeously green.
here's an article called questions on organic mineral makeup at treehugger.

when it comes to packaging matheson says that MAC will take their packaging back in a program called 'back to MAC"- "bring back six containers, get a free lipstick"(p.103). so thats nice, but i am not sure if they are actually a healthy beauty line. i do know that gwen stefani uses this line on tour. god, hopefully she's doing the back to MAC thing and getting some free lipstick in return. i can't imagine how much makeup they'd go through on one tour.

when you buy online you should always try to stock up in order to save on shipping material. bulk shopping is not only really fun, its green. i swear!

i'll have a greeeeeen christmas without you

one of my goals for this christmas season is to buy gifts only handmade and to cut down on my expenditure and support that goes into the non-green hands of department stores and the like. i know its great to receive gifts, but most of the people i buy for already have everything they need/ could go get it anytime themselves. i'll use this site a lot. i can waste away hourrrrrs here.

etsy.com - you can even shop according to your gift receiver's favorite color. shop for local etsy-ers, and search keywords.

getting your girlfriends to go green starts with you, so why not get them into greener pastures by gifting them green? grocery totes like that one (-->) are a great way to move them in that direction. as they say in french, visez vert!

what about this cloth diaper unbleached organic cotton/hemp blend for the new mom in your circle. if i draw a blank on what to give i get candles. having just found at the major candle companies i once loveeeed are chock full of toxins... no more will i buy them. instead here's some soy candles.

a lot of the sellers on this website will send you uber cute boxes or packaging with your order. save the waste and ask them to ship so it gets to you safely and go without the cute bows and signature box.

and if you're crafty yourself... why not make your own gifts? i have knitted scarves, made jellies, cookies and candies, picture frames, etc for my friends/family. getting to say "ohhh, i made it for you" makes you feel proud. just make sure your supplies are green.

every link i am sharing with you also goes into the bookmark folder on my mozilla browser for later reference. in november when i'm looking for gifts, it will be so easy to just pull up the tab "shopping" and remember that amazing handmade site i found back in may.

i also am going to request this type of gift for myself. euh! and don't you dare give me bath and body works! i guess its silly to be thinking about christmas already. i just have so much rolling around in my mind right now, i am trying to type it now so i don't lose my great green ideas when the crunch time arrives.

we should get that elvis recording of blue christmas and make it greener, too. mmm, love that song.
