Save NY Photos and Film

Can you Picture New York without pictures of New York?

Take a second to click here to sign a petition regarding the rules
recently proposed by the New York City Mayor's Office of Film, Theater, and Broadcasting.

Introduced quietly just before Memorial Day weekend, the regulations could severely impede the ability of even casual photographers and filmmakers to operate in New York City. A group of two or more people who want to use a camera in a single public location for more than a half hour (including setup and breakdown time) could be required to
get a city permit and $1 million in liability insurance.

According to the NY Civil Liberties Union, "these regulations violate the First Amendment right to photograph in public places, and open the door to selective and discriminatory enforcement."

Get Your Grill On

With the weather heating up, barbecue season has officially begun. And while a little backyard grilling isn't going to ruin the environment, when 60 million people hit the BBQ at once--like they do on Fourth of July--the impacts can add up. To grill greener, try these tips:

* Opt for a cleaner-burning propane or electric grill over one powered by charcoal, which contributes more to poor air quality. If you've got time to spare, a solar oven or stove avoids emissions altogether.
* If you do use charcoal, look for lump brands (briquettes may contain coal dust or other additives as binders) made from invasive tree species or harvested from sustainably managed forests, and switch from lighter fluid, which releases smog-forming VOCs, to a chimney starter.
* Grill organic, hormone-free meat and mix it up with fish, veggies, even fruit.
* Minimize health risks (from carcinogenic substances that can form when meats are grilled or broiled at high temperature) by choosing lean meats and trimming fat before cooking.
* Set your picnic table with reusable dishware and silverware and cloth napkins. If that's not feasible, look for biodegradable or recycled-paper dinnerware, unbleached cups, and recycled-paper napkins.
* Clean up green with a natural cleaner like Orange Plus (made with orange oil) or SoyClean.

Last stop to save your tax dolors!

I've already done my part, now you do it too. Don't waste $1 milion on programs that just don't work.

"Quite frankly, I don't believe abstinence-only education
programs work in the long run," Strickland said. "There is some
evidence that they may delay the onset of sexual activity, but
over the long term there's not data there that show they
prevent, in a statistical sense, sexual activity outside of
marriage."

"I believe in a comprehensive approach," Strickland said. "I
think, obviously, abstinence should be a part of any education
curriculum, but I think young people need to be educated in ways
that can protect their health and their safety."

"Abstinence-only sex ed may get cut, but not without a fight"
Dayton Daily News
March 21, 2007

From this sound, pragmatic perspective, Gov. Ted Strickland
proposed a new state budget that eliminated funding for unproven
and unrealistic abstinence-only-until-marriage programs in Ohio.

Unfortunately, the state legislature has restored this
funding...$500,000 in each of the next two years.

However, we can still win this battle!

The budget bill will be sent back to the Governor any day for
his final signature. However, he has the ability to veto
abstinence-only funding. If he doesn't, the money stays in the
budget, and Ohio continues to carry out ineffective,
exclusionary programs.

We need to let Gov. Strickland know TODAY that we applaud his
position, and support his continuing leadership -- which he can
do by vetoing abstinence-only-until-marriage funding in the
state budget.

If he doesn't hear from us TODAY he may assume it doesn't
matter.

It's incredibly easy.

1) Visit http://apps.das.ohio.gov/govpublic…

2) Provide your contact information

3) Type or paste a message in the "comments" box urging the
Governor to veto abstinence-only-until-marriage funding. First,
thank the Governor for his leadership in rejecting the funds in
his initial budget proposal. Then, using any/all of the
following points, encourage him to continue to show strong
leadership by vetoing the abstinence-only funding:

a) Almost every major editorial board in the state of Ohio
supports the Governor's decision to reject abstinence-only
funding.

b) A recent study commissioned by the U.S. Congress found no
difference in outcomes between students who participated in
abstinence-only classes and those who have no instruction.

c) A poll conducted by Quinnipiac University showed that 53% of
Ohioans with children in public schools support the Governor?s
position with only 35% in opposition.

d) A study conducted at Case Western Reserve University found
that many of Ohio's abstinence-only-until-marriage programs
actually contain false information about contraceptives,
misrepresent religious convictions as scientific fact, and do
not portray the risks related to sexual activity in a
scientifically accurate manner

4) Request a response

5) Press "Submit"

It takes two minutes -- honest. And it's incredibly important!

Thanks so much for your help!

well, wonder if this will work?

An ACLU notice I got about the possibility of closing Guantanamo Bay:

Dear Friend,

I wanted to send you a quick note to be sure you were the first to
hear some encouraging news: Literally just seconds ago, Senator
Harkin introduced a bill to close the Guantanamo Bay prison 120
days after passage.

This is a huge step in the right direction, but we have to act now to
keep the momentum.

Email Congress: Support Senator Harkin's bill to close the Guantanamo
prison:
http://action.aclu.org/site/R?i=FG…

If Congress hears from enough of us, the bill to shut down the
Guantanamo detention facility could really pick up momentum by June
26th. On that day, activists around the country will join the
ACLU for our Day of Action to Restore Law and Justice.

Senator Harkin's bill, which was just introduced, is an excellent,
comprehensive solution. It would close the Guantanamo prison and end
indefinite detention by requiring the government to get its act
together and finally charge anyone alleged to have committed a crime.

Please urge your senators to co-sponsor Senator Harkin's bill at:
