Today has been fairly unexciting, I spent a lot of time in bed listening to Jo Wiley (because the last time I got to listen to her on the radio was a fiendishly long time ago) and there was David Tennant being interviewed about Saturday's special and geeking about music, twas unexpected and most pleasant. Other than that I've made an epic photopost and tidied out my drawers, freeing me of socks full of holes and trainers this close to falling apart...

I did this week's audio over at [livejournal.com profile] bf_listen_again so if anyone wants to discuss The Harvest or suggest related fanworks (fics, icons, meta) or share their own review then head over the accompanying post and leave/link your suggestions. I thankyou.

Also I come bearing fic rec of the Stargate variety. The Bechedel Test seems to be getting a lot of use in fandom meta lately, which is of course excellent as it makes people re-examine their shows in terms of gender and race. Also a bit unpleasant to realise just how many shows that I love which utterly fail the test on one or other count. (Being Human fails on both counts I might note) [livejournal.com profile] such_heights did stats on gender, race and likelihood of death in Merlin yesterday which produced some surprisingly good results for a show set in (an albeit mythical version of) medieval England - good news, if you're a female character of colour and get to speak you've got a 100% chance of survival, bad news you're 100% likely to be called Guinevere as she's the only character who fits the bill... At least when you compare it with Stargate which really has some shocking results (and that's without taking into account survival rates as there's too much carnage there to even count). However the lass who did the stats for Stargate appears to be attempting to write a series of fix it fics for Stargate, creating missing scenes that give more insight into the characters involved and creating the conversations that would have made the episodes pass the test. I approve of such odd projects, mainly because I like the repairing canon mis-steps and plugging plot holes side of fanfic every bit as much as the obscure shipping. So yes, basically this is a long-winded of saying go read Common Language by [livejournal.com profile] dsudis which does a lot to make Children of the Gods less of a sceevy episode, while fleshing out both Sha're and 'anonymous female airforce sergeant' (from now on she'll always be Jessie to me too).

"You'll always be mine, always and never. Never. The Fire, baby. It'll burn us both. It'll kill us both. There's no place in this world for our kind of fire. Always and never. If I have to die for you tonight, I will."
- Sin City

"Pazuzu you ungrateful gargoyle, I put you through college and this is how you repay me?"

Kryten: "Is it just me, or is that cockroach shuffling too loudly?
Rimmer: "Kryten, it's called a hangover, don't panic."
Lister: "We're on a mining ship, three million years into deep space... can someone explain to me where the smeg I got this traffic cone?"
The Cat: "Hey! It's not a good night unless you get a traffic cone! It's the police woman's helmet and the suspenders I don't understand! "

The Operative: "That girl will rain destruction down on you and your ship. She is an albatross, Captain."
Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: "Way I remember it, albatross was a ship's good luck, 'til some idiot killed it."

"You call yourself a free spirit, a "wild thing," and you're terrified somebody's gonna stick you in a cage. Well baby, you're already in that cage. You built it yourself. And it's not bounded in the west by Tulip, Texas, or in the east by Somali-land. It's wherever you go. Because no matter where you run, you just end up running into yourself."

"Smell is the most powerful memory trigger there is. A certain flower or a whiff of smoke can bring up experiences long forgotten. Books smell - musty and rich. The knowledge gained from a computer has no texture, no context. It's there and then it's gone. If it's to last, then the getting of knowledge should be tangible. It should be smelly."
- Giles, BTVS

Creativity is... viewing the world from a different angle. Taking things from everyday life that otherwise might seem mundane and go un-noticed, and turning them into something beautiful. Finding beauty where there seems to be none and changing the perceptions of others so they can see that beauty too. Making something out of seemingly nothing...

"They have not wanted Peace at all; they have wanted to be spared war -- as though the absence of war was the same as peace."
- Dorothy Thompson

"Peace, in the sense of the absence of war, is of little value to someone who is dying of hunger or cold. It will not remove the pain of torture inflicted on a prisoner of conscience. It does not comfort those who have lost their loved ones in floods caused by senseless deforestation in a neighboring country. Peace can only last where human rights are respected, where people are fed, and where individuals and nations are free."
- Dalai Lama

"First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for the Communists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a Communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out
because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for me
and there was no one left
to speak out for me."
- Pastor Martin Niemöller

"History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again."
- Maya Angelou
