Describe the session
This talk presents how the Atlas of Switzerland evolved from a desktop application into a modern web-based national atlas.
It begins with a short introduction to national atlases and the specific requirements of a Swiss national atlas, including cartographic quality, suitable projections, and support for a wide range of thematic representations. It then explains why we chose deck.gl as the main rendering framework and how it is interleaved with MapLibre GL JS.
Using examples from the Atlas, the session shows how we implement different thematic map types, including choropleth maps, point maps with proportional symbols and icons, and diagram maps. It concludes with practical learnings, technical hurdles, and lessons from bringing complex cartography to the web.
