Outline of the motivation behind Mapterhorn, challenges of getting data from government agencies, processing pipeline overview and discussion of bottlenecks.
As of June 2026, the pipeline transforms 15 TiB of input GeoTIFF elevation data into 10 TiB output terrarium-encoded terrain rgb PMTiles in roughly 2 weeks processing duration on a single host with an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X CPU with 16 cores / 32 threads.
Outlook into pipeline extension from terrain tiles to aerial imagery.
