On slash and female characters
Having been a part of slash and yaoi fandoms for about 6 years now, I've gotten used to quite a lot of really weird phenomena. Anything from kink-memes to squee to fandom wars has passed me by. One of the things I've always sort of taken for granted is the tendency of fandom writers to either dismiss the female lead/love interest, to use her as plot device or to paint her as the bitch, to ridicule her or write her out of the story. I've always thought this was because of a sense of jealousy (this lady is getting the hero, which the writer herself would like to have) or simply because she's a roadblock on the road to male romance.
That is, until I ran into the exception to this rule in the form of one Elizabeth Burke. More on her later.
