At various times, I've been a software engineer, a professional astronomer and a mathematics professor. I didn't plan to be all those things, but they happened anyway.

I've been programming computers since 1980. I remember a time before email and the global Internet. I watched the Web emerge.

I was insatiably inquisitive as a child, and I'm still filled with an unquenchable curiosity about the world around me. I've been a hard-core scientist since the age of about fourteen.

My first unrequited love was a boy in high school. My second unrequited love was a blonde American girl named Lori in my freshman year in college. I followed that with unrequited love for another girl in college, and then with unrequited love for a Canadian girl when I was a graduate student.

I had unrequited love down to a fine art by this time, so you can imagine my surprise when I asked a rather lovely and intelligent American girl to go out with me, and she said yes. She astonished me a second time when she agreed to marry me. We're still together, and we still make each other laugh, often intentionally.

I'm a Rational Humanist Realist Scientist, though I have a special fondness for Zen, because it saved me from going crazy in the summer between high school and college.

We all have depths that other people rarely suspect.
