Where it all began...May 20, 2011
Okay. So I’m finally sitting down to document my descent into the world of Kimura Takuya.
It began with my kids and their middle school band director. Well a couple years before my kids were in middle school since my cousin went to the same middle school (she’s only three years older than my son) and was also in band. Anyway… Mr. Akimoto did an arrangement of Sekai Ni Hitotsu Dake No Hana for the Advanced Concert Band. This song became like their theme song and was played at the end of every concert. When we went to my cousin’s concerts we would hear this song. It was always introduced as a song made popular in Japan by a group named SMAP. Yea, I thought it was a weird name, but never paid any attention. The tune is catchy and my kids really liked it and couldn’t wait to be in the Advance Concert Band so they could play it. Since this was the last song that was played at every concert it would get stuck in my head. Not being tech savvy at all at that point in my life, I never bothered to look up SMAP or the song or anything about it. I would just wait till the next concert and then hum along while the kids played. So Christopher was in band and then Hoku was in band. So I heard this arrangement of Sekai played from 2005 to 2011.
One day at work I was talking with my co-worker about my kids and band and I don’t know why but I mentioned the song Sekai and SMAP. All she could do was laugh and tell me to look up SMAP, but mostly Kimura Takuya. So I Googled and Youtubed and came across the video from the 2002 concert where it was of just Kimura. Holy freakin god. That’s all it took. I needed more.
She told me that I needed to find Long Vacation. Luckily our public library had it. I borrowed it, started watching it that evening, and finished it by morning. At that moment when he opened the door, my fate was sealed. And the only reason why I could trace back to the date of May 20th is the fact that I was supposed to go to an eye doctor appointment on May 21st, but I didn’t make it since I crashed. After that I borrowed everything the library had of his dramas and anything SMAP.
Trolling in youtube I saw a lot of concert clips and knew I had to have them. So I first bought the 2010 concert. So at that point I only knew the name Kimura Takuya. Since the kids and I were watching vids in youtube we started coming up with our own names. Well Tsu was the “oboe solo” and the Korean looking one. Goro was the guy that could not dance, it really made us cringe watching him. Nakai was the one who could dance, but should not sing. Shingo was the big smiley one. Now that I’m thinking about it I remember us having arguments since their performance in the 2002 concert, they were singing different parts. LOL! But it didn’t change what we thought about each of them. Anyway, I finally got the 2010 concert and the kids and I were watching and we got to Five Respect. Oh goodie! Names! LOL! Then it was Shingo’s part and on the screen in the background there was a picture of a “woman” in a pink polka dot dress. I was all, hold on, back up, wth? Is that Shingo Mama?!?!?!
When Shingo came out with Oha, my brothers, husband, and their friend was into jpop. So we all know the song. My kids were small at the time and we even knew the dance. LOL!! The boys used to drive around in Waikiki, blasting this song in their car, just to see the reaction of the Japanese tourists. My husband was working in Waikiki at the time and (I never understood why, and I still don’t) would take pictures with random Japanese tourist posing with theirs hands in the “Oha” motions. I had no real interest in jpop at the time, I did like the song since it was pretty catchy. Never bothered to find out who this “guy” was and why the hell he was dressed like a woman. Can’t say that if I did look into this Shingo Mama “guy” I would have fallen for Kimura and/or SMAP at that time. Anyway, that was a bit off topic but funny as hell.
My kids are taking Japanese in school, and it’s kinda funny since several of their friends are from Japan or have family from there and the kids find it amusing that I’m into SMAP. Well our district has a heavy Japanese influence. For many of the kids, Japanese is their first language. I took Japanese all four years when I was in high school and never used it. LOL! Now I’m starting all over with my kids. At least now I have a reason.
So for a year now I have not gone a day without thinking of, seeing, or listening to Kimura Takuya and SMAP. I’ve learned to do a hell of a lot of stuff online and with a bunch of programs on my computer. LOL! Yea, gifs. Totally learned how to do that just because of that wink. Ha! Didn’t even know WHAT a gif was before this.
Well things happen when they happen for a reason. Apparently, finding this man when I did was the right time for me. Thanks to this man I’ve made friends all across the globe. I've had things to look forward to. I've spent too much money. LOL!! Well this is how it all started for me.
