I read the description of this novel and went “Uh, this is Mattdrai with the names scrubbed off and I think I know which fic it is” and I ordered the novel and yep, it absolutely is. It's So is the Longing and I'm kinda surprised it's still online.

And yeah, I'm old-school enough to feel weird about people doing this to their fanfic and earning money wit it, no matter if it is RPF or FPF.

The way the backgrounds/names and so on were changed just makes the whole thing so hilarious. Connor is Russian. Leon is Swedish but randomly has a Portuguese background. The Tkachuks are Canadian (I LOLed so hard). The Edmonton Oilers are now a team a Florida (OUCH). So fucking absurd.

The fic/book itself is the usual slightly mediocre and slightly out of character A/B/O stuff. It's very dramatic, there is a lot of sex, there are the typical misunderstandings of the fanfic and romance novels genre. I think it might work better in the actual RPF version than it does like this.

Not bad but still a very weird read for me.

It is finally summer, or at least summer-ish. (Never mind the frost warning two days ago.) I took a drive this evening and took this picture from a boat launch at a nearby river.

I also drew a birthday card for my sister and mailed it today.

Baby Miss L is now in her pirate era, so I found some toddler-appropriate books about pirates, plus Commotion in the Ocean and sent them to her. Today I got a video of her reading Commotion in the Ocean - she knows all her sea animals very well! - and also a thumbs up from her mom, who uses it with her students(? she is a speech pathologist who works with preschool kids at a school, so I'm not sure if they are her students or clients) too.

I'm not the most superstitious sports fan out there, but I'm a little stitious and so I would not be surprised if the vibes turn rancid at MSG tonight due to the fucking cheeto attending the game. Fucking James Dolan can go fuck. *deep breath* Still, LGK!!!

In work news, my boss informed me that they would purchase home printer/scanner for me if I had one I liked and it was under $500, so does anyone have any recommendations? I would prefer that it be small, as I don't have a lot of room, but could keep it half under my desk if I shift around the air purifier. I'd need a shelf for it, too probably, so it's not just sitting on my 1939 parquet floor.

Naomi Novik: The Summer War: very charming novella, delivering on a variety of good-for-me-tropes. Dysfunctional siblings argueing, then working together and realising they care? Check! Neat twists on fairy tale motifs while still delivering a fairy tale? Check! Father who has his own story and is neither excused for his actions nor reduced to a one dimensional cliché? Check! It's not the easiest time for me right now for Darth Real Life reasons, and that's leaving aside the general mess the world is in, so I really enjoy delving into well written fiction where most of the characters aren't irresponsible toddler-like megalomaniacs and the plot makes sense.

Daredevil Born Again: Season 2 : Speaking of plots which work: s2 didn't have the problem of essentially being two shows grafted together, and so not only did they have a well executed overall seasonal arc, but the "new" characters were fleshed out, so didn't feel paper thin compared to the "old" ones. Back when I wrote about s1 I mentioned that all these "supervillain elected to high office despite electorate knowing about their past" plots - which comics came up with decades ago, both in DC with Lex Luthor and in Marvel with Kingpin - never felt as believable as now, it's more that "eventually, enough people see through these guys to rise against them" feels unduly optimistic. But within the show, I bought it. And really appreciated the episode where spoilery stuff happens )The thematic importance of this also came to bear in the season's last two episodes where spoilery stuff occurs ) Oh, and of course it was good to see (albeit only a few times in the last three eps or so - Jessica Jones again!

I was answering a comment over on AO3 on my old Stargate fic Old Soldiers Die Hard, the one with Annie the candystriper viewpoint OC, and got to thinking about the elapsed time since I posted it in 2006. She was probably meant to be in her late teens in the story, something like 17 or 18, which means that if she aged in realtime, she'd be in her late 30s now.

I was thinking about this in particular because it was always one of my most popular fics in that fandom, and people often asked for a sequel to that story about Annie grown up (and still do now and then). I don't mind being asked, although it is definitely not happening because I've long since moved on, but it's a bit wild to consider the passage of time in that particular way.

(Annie is grown up and doing fine, btw.)

Summary: It was almost impressive just how quickly everything had gone wrong.
I made chicken pesto meatballs this afternoon and they're good, though they needed more than 10 minutes to reach 165°F (15 minutes worked out). I got 18 so I guess I made them smaller than directed? and they looked like they are swimming in oil when I took them out of the oven, because I guess the pesto (I used Buitoni since it was on sale) was full of oil, so I used a slotted spoon to lift them out and soaked it up with paper towels, so the cleanup wasn't that bad. I also didn't bother adding salt based on comments saying it was too salty - the pesto is what is seasoning the meat so I don't think I'm missing out.

Zhao Yunlan sprawled on a couch, grinning at his phone. The background shows a purple sky with stars. Text reads, "Slo-Mo Rewatch. Guardian - half an episode per week @ sid_guardian.dreamwidth.org"

Hi, welcome back to our Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Watch half an episode a week, and then come and chat about it here in comments. Or you can just jump into the comments without rewatching, of course!

Here is the first half of episode 16. On to the second half!

Episode 16, from 23:53:

Summary:

In Dixing, the Envoy discovers Ding Dun's filed have been destroyed. Zhao Yunlan is still on the run from An Bai and friends. He finds a bar, steals a mask and chats up the barkeeper - dropping unfamiliar terminology and talking about the surface, immediately making himself suspicious. When An Bai et al. arrive and start a fight, Wu Tian'en saves him with his teleportation power. Wu Tian'en warns him about the Regent, who Zhao Yunlan is underestimating as weak and harmless. The Regent appears, and they return him to the palace, where they learn Shen Wei has just left.

Chu Shuzhi and his puppet in the same pose

In Haixing, the case isn't progressing, and Zhao Xinci criticises Zhao Yunlan's methods and suggests dismissing him as chief if even one of the team agrees. Guo Changcheng is the last one Zhao Xinci talks to, offering a lot of leading questions and provocation. Xiao-Guo stands up to him, and Zhao Xinci is satisfied. Then his eyes are yellow, and Zhang Shi tells Xiao-Guo he's his hand-picked weapon. New developments appear in the case: a street has been torn up. When the team arrive at the site, they also learn the security guard witness from the first site has disappeared ... In fact, he's outside the SID right now with Zhu Jiu, who's convinced him destroying the SID will let Dixingren live freely in Haixing.

Quote:

Zhao Xinci to Guo Changcheng: "Da Qing has worked at the SID the longest. The others either possess a risky identity or don't have potential for greatness. Only you have a clean communist background. So if Zhao Yunlan were to be demoted ... You understand my meaning, right?"

Detail(s):

Every time I watch this episode, it stands out to me how many of them notice something off about Zhao Xinci, but they don't talk to each other, so nothing comes of it:
  • Lin Jing's black energy detector goes off (in last week's half-episode)
  • Sang Zan notices him switching between being left-handed and right-handed
  • Xiao-Guo sees him turn all yellow-eyed
  • and Chu Shuzhi says in the lab: "This father of Zhao Yunlan's, I keep feeling a bit ..." so he's picked up on something too!

Questions:

Which this your favourite part/scene/moment in this half-episode? Any favourite lines? What's going on with the masks at the bar? How often do An Bai et al. start a bar fight? What would have happened if Wu Tian'en hadn't been there to save Zhao Yunlan? What does the Regent think happened to the Dijun Register? How much do you think Zhao Xinci means his criticism of Zhao Yunlan? Did he concoct this loyalty test on the spot when it turned out Zhao Yunlan was absent, or would he have done something similar regardless? Why do none of the team talk to each other about Zhao Xinci's suspicious traits? Did Zhu Hong shout at Zhao Xinci in their one-on-one interview? What did Zhao Xinci ask Chu Shuzhi?

And finally, any thoughts about how any of this compares to the novel? Does any of it have any direct relation, besides Papa Zhao having a hitchhiker?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

Here is our schedule for the current batch of episodes - please do sign up to host a post if you can!

The Soviet Union based spin-off continues apace. This episode puts the spotlight on some different characters than the first two, while providing one of the answers to the set up questions already.

Clearly, someone in the scriptwriting team likes The Lives of Others a lot, and I approve )

In conclusion: Another suspenseful episode of the John Le Carré meets Space Exploration show!

I finished that Season 5 AU WIP! Finally!

The Living and the Damned (23K, Londo/G'Kar, mature-rated)
Fixit (of sorts) going AU in 5x18.

Some thoughts on writing WIPs under the cut (not spoilery for this fic in particular, more like general musings).

Under here )

I don't know - what do you all think? Do you post WIPs? Do you read WIPs? It's been a long time since I've been in a fandom that had a lot of WIPs, prior to getting into Murderbot last year, which is almost like old-school ffn/LJ fandom with its very high number of WIPs. Including a lot of unfinished ones! And that's part of what got me back into posting some of my longer fic in WIP form, because there is a certain excitement and energy to it that I miss. Plus, in non-fandom spaces, I've enjoyed serialized media for a very long time (comics, webcomics, TV shows, etc). But it is obviously not without its down side, and I don't think I was prepared for how much trouble I was going to have finishing things when they're being written WIP-style.
musesfool: key lime pie (pie = love)
([personal profile] musesfool Jun. 6th, 2026 07:45 pm)
Yesterday after I logged off work, I made a ricotta cheesecake, and since I know my springform pans are leaky (they are old and need to be replaced), I just used a deep dish pie plate, and it was fine. I also added about 2/3 cup of mini chocolate chips that the recipe did not call for, but which seemed necessary, though it is also a delicious cake without them (the cinnamon/orange/vanilla flavor is actually super Christmassy to me? but the heart wants what it wants, even if it's June rather than December). Also the vanilla bean paste gives it those little speckles which means it's even more delicious than usual! *g* Anyway, if you need a cheesecake but don't have a springform pan or a stand mixer, and don't want to deal with a water bath, this is the way to go.

Then today, I tried to make baked mozzarella sticks instead of fried - mainly because cleaning up after frying is a lot and also the smell lingers - but I didn't realize you are supposed to freeze them for TWO HOURS so I got a late start and didn't eat until almost 6:30. They were okay but not as wonderfully crisp as they get when fried, even though I used panko. Also, despite what some of these recipes say, you really should season every layer - the flour, the egg, and the breadcrumbs. I am just saying.

My plan for tomorrow is to make bacon so there's that for lunch for the week, along with some chicken pesto meatballs - we'll see how they are. I am apparently on a ground chicken kick, because I have a bunch of recipes I want to try, and as long as it keeps being on sale, I'm good to go!

In other news, the Knicks are up 2-0 on the Spurs and only TWO GAMES away from winning a chip! They've won 13 in a row in these playoffs! What even is happening??? MSG is going to be nuts on Monday. But remember, you absolutely do not have to hand it to James Dolan. #go new york go new york go
