Snowball fight?

It's blustery out there! Not terrible, but snowy! That means I'm one of the only people at work.

I am sadly unmotivated to get anything done! You guys won't tell on me if I take a nap under my desk, right?

Snowy commute photos - it's so empty! I guess part of that is that it's still kind of a holiday week, and the other part is snow!

Books - Annual End of Year tally!

It's been a lighter year in books for me than most - I think all the stresses have made it hard for me to sink into a good read than I'd like. I have watched more TV, exercised less, and read less. But you know what? I'm okay with that - it's what I've needed to get through! And I'm going to start doing some burpees and split squats while watching Star Trek reruns as a baby step. :)

Assuming I don't finish either No God But God or Don Quixote by year-end (a good assumption!), my 2013 tally will be 55 books and 18,492 pages. That's ten whole fewer books than last year - a bigger deficit than I'd thought! (And, 5,523 fewer pages - so not ten small books.)

Of those, some of them I have really enjoyed - and some of them have been a real disappointment! At least three are utter trash, which I knew going into it. I've read more nonfiction than in prior years, and I've really enjoyed that - I think I think I don't enjoy nonfiction, and I'm just wrong about that. So in 2014, I'm going to try to correct that misimpression!

I have read every issue of the New Yorker (50, I think?), the Atlantic (10) and Analog (a SF classic, 10) in 2013, too, which makes me feel a little more, er, readly.

FUD

When I was a kid, I liked to eat everything. There was pretty much no foodstuff I didn't like, or drinkstuff, for that matter, although there may have been certain preparations I objected to. But as I've gotten older, I find myself getting pickier! I'm not sure why this is. Is my palette actually changing? I know that when we become seniors, we tend not to taste things as strongly; babies and toddlers have the most sensitive palettes, which is why they dislike a lot of foods we think are fine, but I'm only in my mid-thirties!

Continuing the trend, I discovered this week that I no longer like Twizzlers. So that's now on the list of "things I used to like that I don't anymore that are actually tasty" - i.e., it's not full of foods with different or unusual tastes! What's going on?

Dear tiny sushi shop on the corner:

You are such a tiny little sushi shop (yes you are), that I often feel amusedly paternalistic about you, assuming people must pass you by without seeing you all the time. (In fact, your Yelp patrons agree!) It's kind of a gross corner, too - the buildings are grimier than many other blocks, and now that the Payless has gone, the big empty space there makes it look all the more rundown. But you keep hanging in there!

Anyway, I think it's great that you decided to decorate the place for Hallowe'en! A lot of places don't decorate for, like, anything, and I think this one is a good choice - it's not a religious holiday, so it's less likely to offend than others. I think it's a fun, silly one, and I love it when local establishments get in the theme.

But perhaps the sign above the entrance door reading "DO NOT ENTER: CONTAMINATED AREA" wasn't the best call. Although I see you got a good health grade, which might help reassure the unwary.

Holy housecleaning, Batman!

I spent a ton of time this weekend cleaning house. I'm not sure why - I think I've partially been prompted by thoughts of moving, sure, but it's also that I hate how much stuff one builds up over time, and I'd had enough. So I went through toiletries, a pile of papers on my desk (filled 13 gallons of recycling, to give you an indication), tae kwon do medals, trophies and patches and my whole jewelry collection. (I am missing my watch!) I threw out pieces I didn't want that were damaged or so tarnished I thought they wouldn't be loved, and I'm going to donate the rest if I can't find good homes for them on eBay; I love all my pieces, but these (51!) I haven't worn in years, and it is time to say goodbye. To that end, take a look and if you or someone you know wants any of it, it's yours for no price (if you want to pay for shipping, I'd be 'bliged, but no requirement.) It'll do me good to know they're lovingly worn! The listings are here - I have seven items I haven't put up yet, so you can check back or ask me if you're interested.

I'm working most of today, but at least I am doing so from home and had a good moment reading some contracts in a bubble bath this morning where I was like, ohhh that's what the business guys have been talking about it. Sometimes you gotta explain stuff to lawyers in lawyer, you know? :)

Weekend was. . . well, it was. Long Serious Talks, but I think good ones. Four hours of driving; I wish I could learn faster, but do feel like I'll be able to do it one day!

More later on in the week. After today's work day from home (phoo on not real holiday, yay for contracts in the bubble bath!) I am going to Tiki Monday with a vengeance.
