One problem is have is debating with people who don't have a sound intellectual scaffolding of their beliefs, which leads to them holding clearly contradictory beliefs (e.g. believing universal human rights, and in killing Palestinians because Zionism). The work then is not in exposing them to more facts, but to demonstrate to them that they don't actually believe in universal human rights. Once that contradiction is exposed, then the reconstruction can happen. But goddamn it, this is psychotherapy, not political discussion...

Date: 2026-06-10 08:30 pm (UTC)Gabor Maté has a lot on Zionism as trauma, I think. And it is trauma, which overrides a belief in anything. I know white North American Jews who genuinely seem to believe there’s going to be a Holocaust in Canada any day now. You can’t logic your way around that, and given that my psychiatrist believed that too, I don’t even know how effective therapy is.
The other thing is that exposing the contraction often leads the person to believe that they don’t actually believe in universal human rights. Look at Jesse Brown. He got pushed on Zionism and now he’s a residential school denialist, anti-safe injection site, and appears at cons with Ben Shapiro.

Date: 2026-06-11 10:45 am (UTC)Yeah, I just read an account of a local acquaintance's arrest at the hands of 56 cops (!!!) and what was said at trial, the understanding the cops had of the event, and so on. It's really mindboggling.

Sure, but if his therapist believed the same, they weren't working on undoing that 8)
But your point stands. I mean when looking at the size of the Walk with Israel march this year, the degree of denial seems pretty extreme.

No!! I missed that one, and I still listen to many episodes!
In a sense, I appreciate Hal N!edzv*ecki blowing everything up instead of digging in...

Date: 2026-06-12 10:22 pm (UTC)This is not always bad. "-isms" are notorious for producing fanatics who elevate some particular principle over everything else, leading to results that seem inhumane, if not insane, to everyone but them.
On the other hand, it sure makes it easy for us to justify doing whatever we want, generally to our own profit, while citing ethical and moral principles in our support.
