Probably January ‘26 like the M2 Pro release. Then the M6 refresh will come in October ‘26 with 2nm and OLED, thinner design.
That’s my prediction anyway. If you’re waiting to upgrade, unless you’re still on Intel I’d hold out for fall 2026.

I wouldn’t upgrade this year. Next year you will get an M6 on 2 Nm that will be quite a performance boost, and an OLED screen. Most likely a new design too. May even get cellular connectivity and it will probably get WiFi 7, although this years model ‘may’ get that? But I don’t think any Mac has WiFi 7 yet?

Oh dear! Hit the referb store for an M2 or M3 then, it will be light years ahead of what you have.
I am really looking forward to the M5 based on the iPad results. I currently have an M4 Max 14" 14/32. I am desperately in need of more RAM so I can run larger models. I even thought of trading in now for an unbinned 16" M4 Max 16/40 but that would be silly. I really miss my 16" M3 Pro I traded for this, but it was a time where I really needed the M4 Max, extra ram and couldn't justify the extra cost to stay with a 16". This thing is so loud all the time with 3 displays connected and chugging along through dev work and running LLMs. Memory pressure and swap are bad. I also game a lot on it too so extra GPU horsepower wouldn't hurt. I'll probably end up waiting for the OLED one. I am just really scared they are going to pull a 2016 and screw everything up again. Part of me wants to get the M5 Max 16" because there is a chance it'll be the last "good one" for another 5-6 years like how the ones prior to 2016 were before 2021. I use HDMI port every day and SD card slot. Terrified they will remove those things.
yeah, i have been in a holding pattern since the M3 came out. then i heard good things about the M4. my 2011 is getting too old. the usb ports don't function, some keys don't respond (i use an A1314 bluetooth keyboard), sometimes the bluetooth goes off and i need to reboot. Age related stuff! The super drive works, and i use it for stuff. the battery depletes in about an hour! needless to say, ready for a replacement. at this point, was waiting for the M5 to be announced/released, then make my choice. i could probably do fine with the base M4 with 16/512.
I think Apple's opened up a lane for the Pros to stay pro, especially re-committed with the iPhone Pro.
