Why is "firework" in "firework devices" in the singular but in the other collocations in the plural?

collinsdictionary.com:
(2) firework display - a public event at which fireworks are set alight
Why is it written "fireworks display" in (1) but "firework display" in (2)?

I'm not sure. Fireworks display sounds normal to me.

Why? Because the writer's chose to write it like that, but the singular form seems a bit unusual to me. I say "fireworks display", like owlman. The Wikipedia text is a bit wordy - "firework devices"? Normal people call them "fireworks", don't they?

Russian must have very strict rules
There are many situations in English where more than one choice is available.
Fireworks definition and meaning | Collins English Dictionary Collins (specifying British English ii this and your cases) describes fireworks as

1. a show in which large numbers of fireworks are let off simultaneously

As usual, context is important.
I am going to buy some fireworks.
Are you going to see the fireworks (±display) tonight?
Then Collins, s[ecifying AE has

fireworks in American English
(ˈfaɪrˌwɜrks ) PLURAL NOUN
1. firecrackers, rockets, etc., exploded or burned, as in celebrations, to produce noises or brilliant lighting effects sometimes used in sing.
2. a display of fireworks

The conclusion there seems to be that some people would use only the singular, others would only use the plural, and the last group believes that both are correct.
