British : Knock/Rap

Hello, folks.

I am reading a British online newspaper and spotted verb"rap":

"... police officer knocked on the window and asked if the car belonged to him.
He said. “I was leaning to reach the gearbox and the police thought I was ducking to avoid them. He rapped on my window and it was like a TV programme or something."

My question:
Any difference between the two verb or that writer has delibrately chosen the verb"rap" to avoid redundancy?

They mean virtually the same thing in this context, Ayed, so the writer just wanted to avoid the duplication.
