From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

A female name. Old German Helewidis, compound of haila ‘hale’, ‘sound’, and vid wide’. The name was apparently introduced into England by the Normans, though in Domesday Book there is a Helewis mentioned as having held land Tempore Regis Edwardi (In the Reign of Edward the Confessor). It is fairly common in the 12th and 13th C. The surname Elwes is derived from it. After this it dropped out of general use, but in the 18th C there was some use of Eloisa, a latinization of Hélöise, the French form of the name, famous for its associations with the unhappy love of Abelard.
