Review of Supernatural 6x16: "And Then There Were None"

HOLY CRAP, THIS WAS AWESOME.

I thought this was going to be a refreshingly short reaction post as I often don't seem to have much specific to say when I love an episode of a show just this much. But then I got into some pretty detailed meta about friendship between hunters and why we so often see these kinds of relationships having gone bad, so then that kind of went out the window. Heh.

Review of Supernatural 6x15: "The French Mistake"

I've been so busy the last few days I just barely had time to watch this on Friday, and since then I've been having fun having big social plans and all that but also really wishing they hadn't had to happen now so I had time to finally do a post talking about this so-called (and rightfully so) "totally twisted, all-hell-breaks-loose, fuck-yourself kind of episode."

I do have some minor complaints that I'll get to. As far as crazy fourth-wall-demolishing meta episodes go, I'd say this one is mostly successful and certainly better than "The Real Ghostbusters" (which I do like...sort of) but not quite on par with the total brilliance of "The Monster At the End of This Book." But I say this with no real and heavy feelings of disappointment because this hour of television was quite a fun experience and all a big, ridiculous, totally uncalled-for treat for this fandom which I'm so glad I was around for now that I'm a somewhat recent convert to the show (the explosion of excitement on my Tumblr dashboard was possibly just as huge during and following this episode airing than it was during the Oscars, lol). It was made with every intention of still being useful in moving the plot forward, but possibly also with little regard for how it would stand against serious criticism because this show can probably take a little of that now and then when it will never lose the devotion of the very fans this episode quite specifically appeals to.

Review of Skins 5x03: "Mini" / Supernatural 6x13: "Unforgiven"

I never wrote any kind of reaction post to Rich's Skins episode even though I'm gushingly in love with it, in part because it simply worked for me on such a personal and relatable level that I really couldn't think of that much to say about why it worked so much. In a really different way this one had just as good a portrayal of what being at this age is like for some people and reminded me, regretfully, of some of the kind of girls I knew in school.

And then SPN...I possibly liked this episode even more than last week's. I wrote my whole review of "Like a Virgin" last week without even realizing that I barely touched upon the whole dragon hunt thing because it was practically just present as a sub-plot in the background and a device leading up to the twist at the end. But I was definitely a lot more interested in the case this week as the episode was more heavily involved in it. In typical SPN fashion, though, dealing with the monster of the week is still so far from the main point of the episode, as it's all tied directly to Sam's current conflict with the messes he keeps finding he's made and the actual supernatural threat is allowed to be the least interesting aspect of the story. This is the formula that's always made a Supernatural episode work no matter how non-terrifying the monsters are and how silly in concept the plot may be, and it's why the show is still working now.

Fanmix: "Dean Winchester's Anti-iPod Mix" (Supernatural)

For everyone who misses when all the classic rock, blues rock and metal was still an essential part of SPN as much as I do, this is a 2-disc mix of various music in the same vein as what you used to hear in the soundtrack in just about every episode. Coincidentally one of the songs on the first disc that I'd already had added to my work-in-progress playlist for this was actually used in the most recent episode, as if just to prove me wrong for complaining so much, lol.
