BIG INTRO POST

Hi. My name is Briar Ripley Page. I’m an author and I write mostly fabulist and horror/horror-adjacent quasi-literary fiction for adults. I also sometimes write poetry, essays, SFF, and fiction aimed at more of a teen audience, but none of that is my primary passion or my bread and butter.

If you have a question for me (general, related to writing, about my writing– really, about anything except my personal life or yours), please don’t hesitate to ask!

I have a website at briarripleypage.xyz. Although it’s a little chaotic to look at, it does provide a comprehensive and up-to-date list of both my published work and the various places I am active online. Check it out if you’re interested!

I also have a Patreon. For $1.50 a month, you get a new, never before published short story every month, plus artwork/illustrations and reprinted stories!

Please be aware that I do not usually use content warning tags on blog posts, and although I intend to keep posts on this tumblr more or less PG-13 rated, a lot of my writing contains graphic and potentially disturbing content. If you want to read one of my books or stories but are concerned about triggers and/or age appropriateness, feel free to message me– I can point you to the tamer stuff, or the stuff that doesn’t touch on a particular triggering subject.

I do not care very much what pronouns people use to talk about me, but in general my preference goes (from most to least preferred): they/them or he/him -> neopronouns or it/its -> she/her.

the corollary to “a lot of people who think they ‘just get tension headaches’ have chronic migraine without aura” is…i strongly suspect a lot of people who self-diagnose (or get professionally diagnosed!) with various psychotic and dissociative and seizure disorders “really” have migraine with aura/would benefit as much or more from medication targeting migraines as medication targeting that other stuff (though there is some overlap). people often don’t know migraine auras exist, or don’t know you can have a “silent” migraine (you get the aura and hangover, but not a headache), or don’t know migraine auras can manifest in more ways than a specific type of geometric/abstract visual hallucination.

Not only that — I will legalize all drugs forever.

With how the climate crisis is going... we deserve to spend our final decades high off of our minds on any drug of our choosing. It's called palliative care.

theo van gogh was the one who suggested that his older brother vincent start seriously painting. as soon as theo was gainfully employed he gave vincent around 15% of his own yearly salary for art supplies, lodging, and food. about 2/3rds of vincent's surviving letters were to theo (including vincent's earliest and last letters), all of which were found stored in theo's desk. theo's child, vincent willem, was born on january 31st, 1890, and vincent was so delighted by his nephew that he painted almond blossoms for him. vincent shot himself half a year later on july 29th, 1890. theo's distress at his brother's death worsened his syphilis symptoms and he died half a year after his brother on january 25th, 1891 (four days before vincent willem's first birthday). theo was reburied next to vincent in auvers-sur-oise at the request of theo's wife johanna.

And that love lived on Theo's wife, Johanna, who was the one who pushed for the preservation of Vincent's paintings. Johanna who made sure that her husband's beloved brother would not be forgotten. Johanna who fought tooth and nail so that Theo and Vincent would never be forgotten. Johanna who carried the family legacy, who made sure that the works of Vincent would be kept in her possession. And then Vincent Willem, named for a uncle so loved, carried this legacy and founded the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam.

The van Gogh family history is deeply interwoven with love. It was the love of a brother that gave a young man the courage to paint and the resources to do so. It was the love of a woman for her husband and her husband's beloved brother that made that story known. And it was the love of a nephew, who was so deeply loved even if for such a short time, that made it possible for the world to know Vincent van Gogh.

it's wild that popular discourse around migraines is that there are too many people who claim to have migraines but "just have bad headaches". this is the exact opposite of my experience? i'm still trying to convince several of my friends that their "bad tension headaches" that are unilateral, throbbing, cause light sensitivity, nausea, etc, are migraines lmao. migraine is underdiagnosed and undertreated by every metric i can think of.

this narrative is not harmless! it prevents people from getting treatment that could really benefit them. so i would like it to die. thank you.

As a guy who went to see a neurologist only to "rule out migraines" because I thought I had "tension headaches at worst and also it's not that bad really" only to realize by tracking my headache days that I have very bad chronic migraines just with no aura (most people with migraines don't have them), I co-sign this 100%.

Just starting abortive medications already improved my quality of life so much and now that my doctor started me on preventatives, I might actually be able to have more than a handful of headache-free days each month.

Migraine is frequently misdiagnosed as chronic sinusitis or tension headaches according to research. Mostly because people have a very rigid (inaccurate) idea of what it actually is.

But even if it's not migraine, you still deserve treatment for your headaches. Just because someone else has them worse than you doesn't mean you don't deserve relief.

yeah i found out awhile back that the 'pressure headaches' that i get that 'aren't that bad' (but still leave me feeling sick and dysfunctional all day) were migraines. i now take a low dose of a preventative medication and the number of shitty rain days i have per month has dropped from like ten to two. it's great.

In my experience anyone who has chronic pain of any kind ALWAYS under diagnoses it in part cause people who DON'T have chronic pain always tell them how it's Not That Bad Just Get Over It and it takes a lot of fighting to get anyone (including doctors) to do anything about it. Fucked if I know why. Everyone seems to think we're making it up. I've never met anyone who is making it up.

It's my cat's birthday (anniversary of me getting him) so I told him the story of his life while petting him real good

Highlights include:

  • For your first two years (when you were small) you lived in a foster home with people who raised you into a very polite young man. Two is like you plus me, that's what two is.
  • Some people adopted you before me and they called you Timmy (which is a stupid name) and they returned your ass almost immediately because you were so annoying at that age.
  • Like think about how annoying you are right now at seven years old, but way worse.
  • I'm better than them though, I don't call you Timmy and I wore earplugs to bed for three years because you love to scream at bedtime. Earplugs are like when I roll over and go back to sleep even when you are yelling so so so loud.
  • I got you at a time in my life when I was really sick (being sick is like when I'm up late because I'm throwing up and you are a very handsome good boy who sits with me) and they had to put me asleep for a procedure. A procedure is like what happened to you when they put you asleep and took your balls away.
  • Now you've lived with me for five years. Five is like the number of toe beans on one of your feet. When I clip your nails five is when we're halfway done. But we're hopefully not even halfway done with how long we get to be together. I'm gonna have to figure out new ways to help you count.
