i want to clear up some misconceptions i see floating around thriller bark and “nothing happened.” i promise this is directed at no one in particular, i’ve seen this take in a lot of places, but… i’m not a fan of the idea that zoro thought he was going to survive his thriller bark sacrifice. it’s not true at all — zoro offered his life and was ready to die.
the idea that “zoro made the sacrifice thinking he would survive” is usually meant as a contrast with sanji’s mindset, because supposedly sanji was going to give up his life but zoro wasn’t. that’s just… not how it is. zoro did not offer to take luffy’s pain, he offered to die in luffy’s place. when sanji stepped in and offered to die in luffy and zoro’s place, zoro didn’t want him to do that because he didn’t want sanji to die. he was going to be the one to give up his life. kuma was the one who offered the pain bubble route, and he didn’t do so until after zoro knocked sanji out.
the pain bubble was a mercy because it gave zoro a chance to survive when he should have died. zoro did not survive due to some inner strength he possessed, he survived thanks to a combination of kuma’s mercy and luck. and he knows this. he knows that the only reason why he and the crew walked away from thriller bark is because kuma was honorable and merciful. that’s why he’s so hard on himself for being “weak” afterwards.
even with the pain bubble deal being a mercy, though, i doubt zoro thought he was going to survive it. we’ll never know for sure because we aren’t shown his direct thoughts in the moment, but the reason why i think that is because he asked to move the location. i don’t think that he did that because he was scared of waking the crew up with his screaming or something. i think it’s because he thought he would die.
so yeah. “nothing happened” is a moment that looms large in fandom imagination, but i think that in order to understand it fully, we have to be clear that zoro was using his life to make a deal to save luffy and his crew. he wasn’t bargaining on his ability to withstand pain, or his ability to survive, or his inner strength. he was hoping that kuma would consider his future notoriety as a swordsman even slightly commensurate to luffy’s as pirate king. and because kuma was already excited by luffy and his crew’s potential as liberators, he wanted to grant zoro’s wish to spare his captain, and in the process test his conviction in luffy. hence, nothing happened, and luffy has exceptional friends.
was at a bar and a 50+ year old drunk white woman complimented me and my friend's outfits, told us there was a campsite up in northern maryland where a lot of gay bears go to have sex in the woods. we asked her how she knew about this and she very aggressively said "because i'm a FAG HAG!!! but i'm not allowed to say that anymore I GUESS!!!"
I think the most tragic part of chapter 5 is that we’ll never get to see the flowers dynamics with the rest of the darkner cast.
Imagine Seth trying to get Queen to tell them about Berdly and Queen just not being interested at all.
Tenna trying to recruit Yellow to fill in after the cowboy show got canceled.
Lancer and Aqua would be unstoppable together for reasons I don’t think I even have to say.
Roulxs thinking Flowery is an evil leader despite not being evil, nor a leader.
Orange asking King how to become big and strong like him, and King not knowing how to feel about her since she’s technically both a lightner and darkner.
Blue and Yellow trying to give couples counselling to Lanino and Elnina, Roulxs comes in and says they’re better off with him and Yellow immediately believes him and has to be talked out of trying to get the weather polycule back together.
Sweet Cap’n Cakes getting chased up by Green for dine and dashing.
I would’ve loved to see these dynamics… but at least we got to watch their dream while they lasted.
children are currently the most oppressed group on the planet totaling hundreds of millions doomed and subject to abandonment and indignity in a society that already maligns them at every step, the one kind of person i truly despise is one who "hates children", especially millennials who treat it as a quirky personality trait.
the global prevalence of and apathy toward child abuse, the lack of social opportunities, development and good art made for children, generally vex me more than anything. it's a terrible future we've made.
Can we just like get rid of "vague unstoppable all consuming force of pure evil" as a stock threat. It's the absolute lamest possible source of conflict you can have in your story. I don't even have any sort of principled moral objection to it or anything, I just hate it, it's so boring. It's so big the stakes feel meaningless and the actual threat of failure is essentially absent. It has no motivation or character other than being evil, it instantly vacuums the tension out of a story for me whenever it becomes clear this is what's going on.
okay. i'm just gonna say it. i feel like it needs to be said. everyone has been too quiet on this for too long. the fact that we all act like it's okay that every century gets called one century above what the years make it feel like it should be is NOT OKAY. we can't keep pretending it isn't confusing to hear "18th century" and go "oh yeah, the 1800s - oh wait nooo 1700s." we need to stop letting this happen. we can change history. language is malleable. i'm taking a stance.
"How do you like your tea?"
I
VERY MUCH
ENJOY IT.
"You know, Tori made this herself! We've begun a little garden, you see."
"I hope one day, this whole room will be full of beautiful flowers."
IT IS
A LOVELY
DREAM.
[Asgore hesitates a moment.]
"The only problem is… down here, we don't get enough sun, do we? We need to use sunlamps to make the flowers grow. And sunlamps require electricity... Electricity we don't have here in New Home. Not yet. Most of the resources are going to your project in Hotland, right about now."
[He folds his hands together and smiles at Gaster.]
"It's, er, really impressive!"
THANK YOU.
"Only,... well, I think you forgot to tell me what exactly your project does."
[Gaster takes a moment to think, then sets down his cup.]
THE LARGEST
FACILITY
IN ALL OF
MONSTERKIND'S HISTORY.
"THE CORE."
THE PROVIDER
OF LIFE.
MILES
UPON
MILES
OF CONNECTING POINTS
ALL CONTAINING
THE LIGHT.
THROUGH CONNECTION,
WE ENSURE
IT CONTINUES.
THUS,
WE ENSURE
WE CONTINUE.
IT IS
VERY
EXCITING.
"… The light… continues… to provide life…?"
"Oh, I see. This is the generator, then, is it? Great! I'm glad you have not forgotten!"
AH.
YES.
THE…
GENERATOR.
"I'll have someone along to discuss budget in… oh, a week or so."
[He smiles and leans forward, playing at being conspiratorial.]
"Say, buddy, you think you could get a tunnel directly into the castle? It gets cold at night- just a lil' favour for your old pal Asgore?"
[He winks.
Gaster smiles tightly.]
OF COURSE.
YOU UNDERSTAND
I VALUE YOU FOR MORE
THAN JUST
YOUR PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES…
which is more important: providing electricity to the entire monster race OR... letting my lil soulfriend have a walk around town?
