Deen (Japanese: ディーン Dean) is a playable Wyvern Knight in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776.

Biography

Deen is a knight of Thracia; he was ordered by Prince Arion in secret to keep Linoan of Tarrah safe, requiring that he desert the Thracian army.[1] During the siege of Tarrah, he helped defend the city. After Thracia's forces take over the city, Deen joins Leif's liberation army.

Fire Emblem: Thracia 776

Role

Deen is a playable character. He is available from the start of Chapter 14. In Chapter 14, Deen and Eda are part of their own faction, and as such do not gain any bonus from Authority. In the same chapter, if Deen visits the south-western house, he will be given his personal weapon, the Dragon Lance. If Linoan leaves the party (either by being killed, captured and taken away, or not escaping) at any point, Deen will leave the party at the end of the chapter.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Deen is a pre-promoted Wyvern Knight who joins in Chapter 14; as such, his availability is limited to the second half of Thracia 776.

Deen's base stats are very good across the board, and he can kill most generic enemies in the game with them. With his follow-up critical modifier of 3, if he is given a Killer Lance, he will usually have a 100% chance to crit on the second attack, which will kill all but the sturdiest of enemies. His base weapon ranks are both excellent—when mounted, he can use A-level lances, and when dismounted, he can use A-level swords; this allows him to use every non-personal sword and lance in Thracia 776, further increasing his combat potential.

Deen can obtain his personal weapon—the Dragon Lance—in the chapter he joins. It has a very high might at 16 and has a brave effect, further strengthening Deen's ability to one-round enemies; additionally, it gives Deen Vantage, allowing him to kill 1-range enemies on enemy phase without taking any damage. It is difficult to obtain, as it is located in a house surrounded by enemies effective against Deen, including a Tornado tome user and several Ballistae. Deen is good enough at combat without the Dragon Lance, but obtaining it further increases Deen's combat potential on outdoor maps.

In indoor maps, Deen's usefulness is more limited. On outdoor maps, he benefits from flying movement, which allows him to move around freely and reach important locations sooner than other units, while on indoor maps, his movement is much worse, he takes heavy stat penalties and he can only use swords, preventing him from using the Dragon Lance. However, Deen still has A rank swords, allowing him to maintain his good combat or use utility swords like the Sleep Sword or King Sword, so Deen is still usable in indoor chapters. Additionally, his status as the only unit in the game on the receiving end of 30 total support points combined with his high stats can make him a powerful Arena fighter, as the +30 Hit/Crit/Avo/CrtAvo allows him to crush the Arena with ease with very little risk of death, as he his all but guaranteed to PCC-crit his opponent on his follow up.

Deen has two mutual support partners: Eda and Linoan. Eda and Deen share the same movement type, so getting them in each other's support range is not difficult; Linoan's bonus is even higher than Eda's, but she is more difficult to keep in Deen's range due to movement differences. Neither of these supports is necessary for Deen to function, but they can further improve his already good combat. Additionally, making use of these supports can improve Linoan and Eda's combat, further increasing Deen's utility. Also note that, in the case that Linoan dies or is captured, Deen will leave the party for the rest of the game.

Deen is vulnerable to bonus damage; as a flyer, he is weak to bows and wind magic, the latter compounded by his low magic. Deen can generally avoid this issue on player phase, as bows cannot attack at one-range and most bow and wind magic users have fairly low defense; additionally, Deen generally has enough HP and defense to withstand at least one attack from a bow or a Wind tome. However, Deen may die if he is exposed to many bow or wind users, or a particularly strong user of such.

Endings

Deen, Hero of the Clear Blue Skies
After the war's end, Deen escorted the wounded Arion to the former region of South Thracia. Continuing to watch over him, Deen was later appointed the head of the reborn wyvern knights of Thracia. A few years later, he reentered the stage of world politics, his new post elevating him to a key role.

Trivia

  • Deen is the first playable male character of the Wyvern class line. By extension, while not the first male character of a flying class throughout the series, he is the first playable one.
  • The Crusader Dáinn was referred to as "Dean" (ディーン) in the in-game text of Genealogy of the Holy War, though all other sources use the name "Dain" (ダイン).
  • According to Thracia 776's website, Deen was designed to look 27 years old.[2]
