Date: 2021-09-20 03:31 pm (UTC)First off - 90s Irish/English show Ballykissangel (see Wikipedia page here) Peter Clifford, an English Catholic priest ends up getting sent to the village of Ballykissangel, where he ends up becoming part of the community, and clashes with the feisty landlady of the local pub, Assumpta Fitzgerald.
With a will-they, won't they romance that rivals Fleabag Season 2 (no exaggeration at all - Ballykissangel walked so Fleabag Season 2 could run), a brilliant cast of characters that demonstrate Irish humour and the ordinary Irish life perfectly, and a skilled blend of romance, humour and angst that I've yet to see done better in a show since, I highly, highly recommend Ballykissangel (well, the first 3 seasons at least... but that's too spoilery to explain, so just take my word for it xD)
I stumbled across Peak Practice during one of its few reruns 2 years ago (Wikipedia page here) It's a 90s medical show set in a British countryside GP/doctors' practice, and its mix of humour, romance, brilliantly written characters, tackling of serious issues & angst was totally up my street.
My fav character in the show had an ongoing mental health storyline throughout the majority of the show's 12 seasons, and the first 3 seasons has one of my favourite romantic pairings <3
This vid (made in 2006, so beware the quality) shows the characters off brilliantly, so I'd highly recommend it if anyone is on the fence about whether they'd be interested in the show. Also, if anyone is a fan of the Inspector Morse/Lewis TV show - Kevin Whately (Inspector Lewis) is one of the main characters.

Daughter of Shanghai (1937): An heiress (played by Anna May Wong) goes undercover to investigate her father's murder. See
The Lady Hermit (1971): The swordswoman Chui-ping idolizes the mysterious Lady Hermit and wants to become her student. Yu-shuang (the Lady Hermit) has been lying low while recovering from an injury she received a few years ago. Chui-ping's search attracts the attention of the Lady Hermit's enemies, as well as Yu-shuang herself. It has tremendous femslash and OT3 potential (imho all parties involved in the love triangle seem to be in love with each other). I'm a bit surprised there's no fic on AO3 for it.
云芊传 | Legend of Two Girls (2020): A wuxia-ish webseries with two f/f romances (one happy, and one tragic). It's about 60 minutes in total and can be found with subtitles here (there’s links to the official app and Weibo in the descriptions).
Mystère à la Tour Eiffel (2015): Mystery, murder, and queer romance in 1890s Paris. Louise, the daughter of one of the architects of the Eiffel Tower, is being framed for murders and turns to Henriette, a magician's assistant, for help. I believe this is available on Amazon Prime (the series it's part of is titled 'Mystery in Paris' there).
Phantom of the Opera (Synetic Theater 2020): A Phantom of the Opera adaptation in which the titular phantom is a ballerina who was burned in a theater fire. I love her interactions with Christine! I believe it's available to rent here. N.B.: There's strobing lighting used in a number of scenes (mostly going to the Phantom's lair, iirc).

- Star Knight/El Caballero del Dragón (1985): I cannot believe I just discovered this film this year because it feels like it was crafted specifically to appeal to me at age 10. The rebellious medieval princess x new wave spaceman romance you never knew you needed in your life.
- Jakob's Wife (2021): Starring horror icon Barbara Crampton. Preacher's wife who feels trapped by social expectations becomes vampire MILF. Streaming on shudder.
- The Game aka The Cold (1984): Extremely low budget take on the 'rich people invite strangers to a haunted house' genre. This movie is wild and nonsensical and I have no idea what is going on half the time and I am obsessed.
- Space Battle Lunchtime: Middle grade/low YA graphic novel series about the first human contestant on space masterchef. Canon xeno lesbian rom-com. Reads like if Douglas Adams wrote shoujo manga.
- The Oracle Code: Standalone DCU graphic novel. Newly disabled Barbara Gordon solves a spooky mystery at her rehab facility. They made a gothic novel about Oracle, you guys, I love to be pandered to so specifically
- Shadow of the Batgirl: Another standalone DCU Graphic novel. Cass Cain learns what it means to be a hero, eats noodles, hangs out in the library. This is the best Cass story since like 2005 it's so cute and lovely.

What We Do in the Shadows (tv) - this show is so hilarious and ridiculous and queer. If you've seen the movie, the tv show is (to me) even funnier and just full of heart. And blood. And bones. And the stringy bits. It's about vampires, is what I'm saying, and it kind of secretly stars Harvey Guillen, who is fat and queer and Latino and the best.
Ted Lasso - this might be ineligible now? but if not I will look forward to festivids for it.
The Expanse - I'm sure others will nominate this delightful space show full of beautiful amazing ladies but I only recently watched the show, so I am going to be joining in the Expanse love for the first time this year!
Mythic Quest - This is such a sweet show (about a video game studio that produces a game called Mythic Quest) and I want vids about all the ladies and also Danny Pudi's very evil character Brad. And maybe a vid about Poppy and Ian's frenemies thing.
Lego Masters - A fun, pretty low-stress reality competition show with so many beautiful lego builds to admire! Plus lots of fun shots of massive lego builds smashing and exploding.
Taskmaster UK - I have gotten completely obsessed with this show and I need one million vids for it but unfortunately at this time to my knowledge there are two vids for it. It's sort of like a British panel show except it's comedians trying to do outlandish tasks and then being judged on them . It is the kinkiest tv show I have ever seen.
Taskmaster NZ - the New Zealand spinoff of the UK show is incredibly charming, and though it lacks the intensity of kink that you get on the UK version (who could possibly replicate that), it's super fun and funny and Paul Williams is great as the Taskmaster's Assistant. The second season has probably the best Taskmaster contestant of all time, David Carreos, a true jewel in human form.
Rutherford Falls - this is a charming small-town comedy starring some wonderful Native actors (unfortunately imo Ed Helms is also there). But I want so many Reagan vids and Terry vids! Reagan runs a cultural center and Terry runs the local casino and they're both trying so hard and often in each other's way and I love them.
Ghosts - completely adorable British comedy about a couple who move into an ancient estate full of ghosts and learn to get along with and befriend the ghosts. It also stars several people I later got to know on Taskmaster UK (Lolly Adefope, Katy Wix, and Charlotte Richie).
Surreal Estate - this is a paranormal investigation show that is NOT ABOUT COPS, and I am so excited about it! It stars Tim Rozon and Sarah Levy and it's about real estate agents who sell haunted houses, an extremely charming premise. It's funny and spooky and is building that team-y found-family vibe nice and slow.
12 Monkeys - killa already said this upthread but I love the tv series version of 12 Monkeys and it could be made into SO MANY cool vids! Time loops time loops time loops plus just endless wacky weirdness and bizarre sadness and some very tempting to vid visuals.

OR IS SHE? The film was thought to be destroyed during the Islamic Revolution but it was found a few years ago, smuggled out of the country and restored. (I have a subtitle file if you need it.)
Teine Sā A series of short stories featuring Frankie Adams about Pasifika atua set within a modern setting.
We are Lady Parts We all want a show about Muslim women in a punk rock band, right? Bonus points for friendship, the daydream pastiches, and really awesome songs.

- Luca (2021): I was charmed by the gay Italian merpeople Pixar movie!
- Blinded by the Light (2019): A wonderful semi-musical about a Pakistani-British teenager coming of age in 1980s Britain, made by the director of Bend It Like Beckham. The one limiting thing is I'm not sure you could vid it to anything but a Bruce Springsteen song, lol. (I'm also thinking about My Beautiful Laundrette, which is similarly a Pakistani-British story in the '80s but is also a very interesting/complex queer love story; it has less viddable visuals, though.)
- Test Pilot (1938): OT3-y classic film with Clark Gable/Myrna Loy/Spencer Tracy. (I'm also weighing Talk of the Town. I just like classic Hollywood OT3s, as my Festivids entry last year probably made clear.)
- Mustang (2015): An incredible Turkish film with almost a contemporary fairy tale vibe about five sisters who are locked up and married off one at a time after they are seen playing with boys on the beach on the last day of school.
- IT (1990) and 11.22.63, because I or my sister have probably made all or most of the vid content for both these adaptations and I'm still on a big Stephen King kick. Even if you're not really a horror person, the 11.22.63 mini-series is a great time travel thriller and Sarah Gadon's FACE.
- Infinity Train: I'm still mad HBO canceled this show halfway through its planned arc, but it's such an inventive animated series and I found the first three seasons in particular very moving.

In a very different vein, Rutherford Falls (on Peacock), also only one season so far, is a fantastic sit com two hander between two best friend history nerds in a small US town. Nathan Rutherford, a white man, is a descendant of the Rutherford the town is named after, and runs a museum all about the Rutherfords. Reagan Wells, a Native woman, is a member of the Minishonka Nation, whose land it was until colonisers came along, who runs a tiny cultural centre inside a casino. The showrunner is a Native woman, and at least half of the writing team are Native. It's good and funny and pointed and has so much heart, and I think great things could be done in vids.

Date: 2021-09-27 08:27 pm (UTC)The first contender is Dr. K's Exotic Animal ER on Disney+, which follows two vets and their techs in Florida as they treat a huge range of pets (large and small birds, reptiles, amphibians, rodents and rabbits and weasels, marsupials, pigs, goats, raccoons, foxes, lynxes, nonhuman primates...). There's a lot that can be mined here for love between people and animals, and for competence kink as the vets work their magic. There's also potential for social commentary on why on Earth some of these species are legal to own in the region where the show takes place.
The second is Critter Fixers, two short seasons also on Disney+ following two Black American veterinarians who run a private practice in Georgia. They have a straight man/funny man dynamic somewhat reminiscent of Captain Holt and Jake Peralta from Brooklyn 99, and they could be read as slashable, for those who are into it. They see so-called exotic animals like in the other show but they also do cats and dogs and farm animals.
Additional warnings include, maybe obviously, surgery and other medical procedures intended to treat animals.

- 棋魂 | Hikaru no Go (Live Action TV): Chinese live action adaptation of the Japanese anime/manga following a young boy/teen who picks up a ancient go playing ghost and gets into the board game go as a result. Delightful OTP ship Shi Guang/Yu Liang (Hikaru/Akira) and a nice coming-of-age story.
- 阴阳师: 晴雅集 | Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity (Movie 2020): Pretty fantasy movie based on the Japanese novel Onmyoji. Four masters gather in the imperial city for a ceremony to bind a giant snake demon and keep it from escaping into the world. Has some low key BL vibes and decent budget.
- Dark Matter (TV): 3 season SyFy TV show canceled before it's time. A great ensemble cast with some really outstanding characters, also the best ground hog day episode of television I have ever seen. Season 1 wasn't really my thing but Season 3 was an utter delight and I wish there were more of this show. Great for found family feelings, kick ass ladies, and a generally good time.
- きのう何食べた? | Kinou Nani Tabeta? | What Did You Eat Yesterday? (2019 TV): Sweet/charming slice of life drama following a gay couple in their 40s who like food. This is like a cooking show but with a plot, I love the recipes and how much both characters love food (one more on the making-food side, one more on the eating food side).
- Lil Nas X RPF: I have been listening to his new album a lot and he produced a lot of video footage to go with it/in the run up to it which is fun, his fashion is great, he seems to be a cool person, and I can't find any vids for him though I'm somewhat stymied by the fact that searching just gives me vids for other fandoms to his songs
- 琅琊榜 | Nirvana in Fire (TV): Epic Chinese historical drama that's been reasonably compared to the Count of Monte Cristo, identity shenanigans, extreme character competency, and intricate, compelling plotting. Also great acting and characters.
