If the breed featured has a debilitating health issues as their defining feature I will include a [link] to information of the condition beside the breed name.

This is not comprehensive, the abscence of a [link] doesn’t mean the breed is without issue. It may just mean there isn’t one, concise artle to link. Always do your research.

Here is some recommended reading.

If the color/pattern is relatively new, particularly rare, or affiliated with some sort of health condition I will include a [link] to information on the subject beside the color/pattern description.

The letter/number combination in the tags is determined using the Fédération Internationale Féline EMS system. I may also reference the EMS codes from GCCF, LCWW, WCF or WOF.

Here is a glossary of colloquial and breed-specific terms for colors and patterns. You can browse the different breeds, colors and patterns featured here through the tags page.

You can send in pictures of your cat if you like and I will tell you what they appear to be. It is helpful to include some history on the acquisition of your cat. It is helpful to include multiple angles, varied lighting, close-up of parted fur and especially nose and paw pads. Remember that this is an educated guess only.

I will answer genetics oriented questions to the best of my ability, I have a working understanding of cat genetics but for more complicated or in-depth questions regarding genotype I recommend asking @amber-tortoiseshell. I’m most confident with my expertise on phenotype (appearance) and cat breeds.

Hi! My friend just adopted this sweet lady named Fifi! Her pattern is so pretty... do you know how there can be such light creams and dark spots on the same cat?

She’s a beautiful seal tortoise point with white!

The color restriction from the pointed gene tends to visually “wash out” the coloration, giving the red a creamier hue and the black a brown or smokey tone.

image

You may have seen this cat circulating warrior cats forums the web labeled as to a chocolate calico but she’s actual a seal mink tortie, the color restriction lightens and washes out the seal/black and red coloration.

OOPS. BUTTERFINGERS. You don't have to identify Ducky, I know he's a seal point with white, but you DO have to look at him :) He's very affectionate and has a tiny little "uuu" meow. I know he's not a birman but imo he looks very birman-like with his big soulful eyes and sweetly stupid demeanor. Enjoy him!

Clinical, Histopathological and Genetic Features of a Cutaneous Adnexal Polycystic Syndrome in Lykoi Cats: A Prospective Study of 10 Cases

Objectives

The Lykoi is a recently recognised feline breed with a unique coat phenotype caused by six variants of the Hairless (HR) gene. A specific severe cutaneous comedonal syndrome has been reported in this breed. The aim of the study was to carry out a clinical, histopathological and genetic characterisation of this syndrome.

Methods

Prospective data collection included clinical evaluation, skin biopsies for histopathology, trichoscopic examination of hair shafts, blood sampling for haematology and biochemistry, cutaneous swabs for bacteriological culture, and buccal swabs for DNA extraction and genotyping.

Results

In total, 11 privately owned Lykoi cats were enrolled, including those with varying degrees of skin involvement and one healthy cat. Cats were aged 1.5–7 years at the time of diagnosis. Clinical presentation was characterised by papular lesions and comedones, ranging from severe generalised forms (n = 6/10) to moderate regional forms (n = 2/10) and to mild scattered forms (n = 2/10). Histopathological lesions from skin biopsies revealed infundibular follicular cysts (n = 9/10), sebaceous gland (duct) cysts (n = 10/10) and sweat gland cysts (n = 5/10). Genetic analysis identified 5/6 described HR variants among the 10 affected Lykoi and the control Lykoi.

Conclusions and Relevance

This cutaneous syndrome shows a variable clinical severity that is not fully explained by genotype alone. The consistent presence of cysts from all three adnexal structures, even in clinically unaffected skin, supports the recognition of a novel skin condition, which we propose to name cutaneous adnexal polycystic syndrome (CAPS) in Lykoi cats. Further research is needed to elucidate its pathogenesis.

I strongly encourage you to read the full study, it’s extremely interesting - although be warned, it does have visuals.

I’ve talked about the Lykoi breed before and I’m glad they’re finally getting more attention, I hope further research is done into CAPS.

Something I thought was interesting was how the asymptomatic Lykoi had an isolated sebaceous duct cyst, she is 3y at the time the sample was collected and the most common age of symptom onset appears to be 3.5y - 4y.

Will she still be subclinical a year from the study?
