Vampire Freaks was a social networking site built around industrial and gothic subcultures. At its height, it had over 2 million profiles, and hundreds of thousands of active users.
In early 2020, the social network aspects were closed, and the site retooled into an online clothing store.
History
The site was created in 1999 by jet, as a place to discuss industrial music, and for him to post his music reviews. over time, the messageboard became more popular, and the site became more and more focused on social elements.
In 2004, the site was rebuilt to function as a social networking site, allowing users to create their own profiles and follow one another, while still posting music news and features to the front page. As the ability to post music and videos was implimented, more and more alternative bands joined the site to share their msuic and interact with their fans.
Cults
Users of the site could set up communities known as "cults". Some of the most popular cults were fangroups based around Alice in Wonderland[1] and Harry Potter[2], as well as LGBT groups[3]
Fanworks
Some users created profiles to roleplay as members from their favourite bands.[4]
