The Tri-State Con, also called the New York Comic Con and claimed to be the first comics convention, was held for one day in 1964 in New York. Most claim 50-60 fans attended[1][2], with other estimates being around 100[3].
Details
The con was originally prompted by Jerry Bails who placed it in the hands of George Pacinda and friends (Ron Fradkin and Len Wein were part of that group), but when things failed to eventuate, Bernie Bubnis (then 16 years old), Ron Fradkin and Len Wein took it upon themselves to ensure the convention happened. Bubnis printed a progress report and sent it to a variety of fans, whose names he gleaned form the letters section of comic books. Ethan Roberts assisted in finding a venue (the other three were under 18 and so were unable to book anywhere).
