Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel by Mary Shelley, first published anonymously in 1818. It is usually considered to be the first modern science fiction novel.
The novel was edited by Shelley and republished in 1831. One change was to alter the backstory of Elizabeth Lavenza, Victor Frankenstein's eventual wife, from Victor's biological first cousin to an orphan adopted by Victor's parents.
The name "Frankenstein" has come to be used in popular culture to refer to Frankenstein's monster (usually known as "the Creature" in the context of the novel). The character has become a horror icon, heavily influenced by Boris Karloff's iconic portrayal in the 1930s Universal Frankenstein films.
Fandom
The slash pairing Victor Frankenstein/Henry Clerval (aka "Clervalstein") is popular in fanfiction based on the book. It was a contender in the second MLM Ship Bracket Tournament. Confusingly, in the classic 1931 film Frankenstein, the main character is renamed Henry Frankenstein and his friend is named Victor Moritz, making the analogous ship also Victor/Henry.
Victor Frankenstein/The Creature is also a common pairing. It was a contender in the Ultimate Incest Tournament.
Victor Frankenstein/Igor is popular in works based on the 2015 film Victor Frankenstein (in which the characters are portrayed by James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe). Igor is a Universal films based composite character who does not appear in the original novel.

- Frankenstein (2025) directed by Guillermo del Toro. The film is yet to be released on streaming, but notable about the adaptation's fandom response is shipping Elizabeth Harlander/Frankenstein's Creature, and thirst for Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Creature.

"The Shape of Water Oscar Party"; Author's note: "...As a monster fan ever since childhood, you have NO idea how much that means to me, doubly so because I LOVE Guillermo Del Toro’s work. To see a film that is, essentially, part of The Creature of the Black Lagoon’s legacy to nab THE top prize in Hollywood is nothing short of phenomenal, in a genre where movie monsters have been a staple since the beginning; from the era of Karloff’s Frankenstein and Lugosi’s Dracula all the way to the Xenomorph and the Predator and BOTH Clash of the Titans (the old one is still better). And at long last, after all these decades, a monster movie nabs the Oscar." Art by nazrigar. (2018)
