Intro Post

Hi y'all! So, what I really want, even more than a lifetime supply of dark chocolate, a Buffy/Northanger Abbey crossover and a pony, is a widgety, login-and-customizable website equivalent of this comm. Where you could log in to add things to the master calendar for everybody to see, and then toggle over to your own personal calendar, marked with everything you've specified as important to you -- say, for instance, everything that's been tagged as "stargate" or "multifandom", with a note-to-self that your Big Bang draft deadline is April 20th.

I am not a programmer, so this is my best solution. What I hope is that this will become very large -- that it'll become habit for everyone hosting some sort of fandom event to hop over here and cross-post the announcement, as soon as they know their hard dates.

Dreamwidth, I believe, is working on making it possible to add communities to your reading list and then specify that only certain tags show up there, so you could add [community profile] fandomcalendar and not be bombarded by a zillion announcements you don't care about. That'll be pretty cool.

Here's the text I've dumped into the community profile for now:
A hub for the dazed and confused who always notice that More Joy Day (or International Blog Against Racism Week, or Yuletide sign-ups...) happened two days ago while you were napping.

Use it to note and promote your ficathons, fests and other events fannish or of interest to the fan community. Use it to keep track of what's going on.

Suggested (but not hard and fast) posting format:

Please check out the tag page, and tag liberally. The Yuletide obscure fandom fic exchange, for example, gets seven of them:
event:yuletide
fandom:multifandom
format:exchange
frequency:annual
medium:fanfiction
sign-up:2010 dec
due:2010 dec
(whew.)

Got questions, suggestions or concerns? I want them! Here's the welcome post, or reach me, Stulti, at stultiloquentia@yahoo.ca.
Please, if you have any thoughts, suggestions, enthusiasms, anything, let me know. How should we tag-wrangle? Should I shoot for a monthly compilation post? I've never run a comm before, so I'm eager for help and advice. Pimp like whoa. Post your ficathon. W00t.

I wonder if it might be worth also setting up a GoogleCalendar related to the comm? I don't know how difficult that would be.

You should add this comm to [community profile] newbieguide and http://wiki.dwscoalition.org/notes/Community_List, and promote it at [site community profile] dw_community_promo

Very easy to set up gCal - you can make it public and there's even an RSS feed provided. As the tagger and coder for SG1_Debrief, may I just say it's about bloody time!!

*g*

FYI, I have a list of all the SG-1 convention dates here and, considering I'm already coding in the SG-1 ficathon/etc. dates weekly, I'd be happy to help out over here!!

Two questions: is it ok to post about ficathons one is not organizing or even participating in? In other words, is it ok for readers to mention ficathons?

I'm sure you've thought about tagging posts by fandom so I'd like to know why you decided against it (if you don't mind answering, of course).

Finally, thanks for setting this community up. It's great!

[personal profile] ninetydegrees 2010-02-16 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Would it be ok to post about ficathons whose sign-ups are already closed? As a fanfic reader, I'm interested in challenges I haven't heard of yet and don't care about sign-ups (I care more about posting dates) but I'm not sure whom this community is targeted to.

Hi! I've got a comm ([community profile] promptmemes) where people can start, well, prompt memes. I've got a few started that I'd like to advertise here and I was wondering if you'd prefer if I did them all in one post, did them separately (I'd space them out over a few days if I did this) or if it'd be alright to just advertise the comm itself?

Thanks, and thanks for the comm especially, I follow it religiously.

I don't know what stulti'll say but I think it'd be great to have a post to promote the comm itself, but with links to each meme. (and the list you compiled is fabulous!)

question. I was wondering if there was an LJ version of this comm and fandom newsletters? Or maybe an rss feed for both that I could see on LJ? ty
ninetydegrees: Art: self-portrait (Default)

[personal profile] ninetydegrees 2011-11-29 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
We didn't make any LJ versions of these but I can't say whether somebody else did. I know there are fandom-specific calendar comms but I don't think there's a multifandom one. Maybe Stulti knows more about that than I do. :)
As for feeds I tried to see if somebody had made any but free accounts aren't allowed to do that over on LJ and that's all I have. If you have a paid LJ account you can do it or even create the feeds if they don't exist. I think it's at http://www.livejournal.com/syn/.

I realize you mostly take posts about fanfiction events, but can we post about fan conventions?

Thank you,

Good evening,

I just wanted to pop over (from China Shop's Fandom Appreciation 2013, specifically) just leave this note for all the moderators on this community. I discovered this community back in 2012, during the Fandom Snowflake Challenge (that seriously brought this and so much else about Transformative Works into my life), and it's been a god send ever since. Today we're supposed to send positive feedback to fannish community moderators, challenge organisers, newsletter compilers or archivists.

I want to thank all of you, so much. Because of this community I've gotten to know so much more about whats going on in every corner of fandom I can in most given times. Where to find fandom-specific, and fandom-wide, everything's. I'm so endlessly grateful to all of you, and I just wanted to take this moment to let you all know. Your community is awesome, You are awesome, and it fills my world with starts and hearts.

(Edit: oh sweet Kaylee! I miss you!)

Hi there. The latest post is by some Australian group called Smash. i don't know anything about this group but I want to know one thing. if this group is at all commercial, I do not believe they should be allowed to post to this comm. Can you please investigate this group? Thank you.

Hi Elizabeth! Thanks a lot for the heads-up. I mean it. RL has been kicking my butt lately and I haven't been able to keep an eye on FC.
Info on their site says that "SMASH! Sydney Manga and Anime Show is organised by SMASH Inc, an incorporated non-profit organisation whose aim is to create an open and affordable event for fans which encourages art, creativity and community involvement." It seems to me smash 15 is a pretty standard convention and, looking at the rules of the fanfic competition, it doesn't look like it's tied to attending the comm or any other direct commercial thing. Does that seem fair to you?

Hey! Is it okay to post about the friending meme going on at my journal? I'm uncertain - it's not technically a fandom event. (I have a banner, though! That makes it seem officialish?)

Yep! You do mention fandom in your description so maybe add something like inspired by but not limited to fandom folks in your promo post. What do you think? (also make sure to mention "posted with the admins' permission" or something similar so you don't get any comments about this; I don't expect any but who knows?)

Hello, I'm one of the mods for [community profile] potterfests, a community for promoting fests and challenges in the Harry Potter fandom. It's similar to [community profile] fandomcalendar except its focus is on the HP fandom. Would it be all right for me to advertise [community profile] potterfests on here? I totally understand if you prefer that [community profile] fandomcalendar be used for fest and challenge announcements only.

Thank you very much for providing this space for everyone to promote their fests and challenges. It's a great place for finding out what's happening in the fandom!

I think I made a mistake by posting the sign-up announcement for my comm during the 4th of July weekend here in the US. Would y'all mind if I deleted my post and gave it another shot this week? I have had only 2 people sign up since and LOL one of them was a friend who has known about the comm.

Thanks!

Hi! I have a quick question:
Would it be okay to post promo for an interest form for a fandom event that is still in the hypothetical/planning stages? I've got an event in the works and recently posted an interest form on Tumblr, but would like to get feelers out beyond just that site. If not that's totally fine!
