Intro Post
Hi y'all! So, what I really want, even more than a lifetime supply of dark chocolate, a Buffy/Northanger Abbey crossover and a pony, is a widgety, login-and-customizable website equivalent of this comm. Where you could log in to add things to the master calendar for everybody to see, and then toggle over to your own personal calendar, marked with everything you've specified as important to you -- say, for instance, everything that's been tagged as "stargate" or "multifandom", with a note-to-self that your Big Bang draft deadline is April 20th.
I am not a programmer, so this is my best solution. What I hope is that this will become very large -- that it'll become habit for everyone hosting some sort of fandom event to hop over here and cross-post the announcement, as soon as they know their hard dates.
Dreamwidth, I believe, is working on making it possible to add communities to your reading list and then specify that only certain tags show up there, so you could add
fandomcalendar and not be bombarded by a zillion announcements you don't care about. That'll be pretty cool.
Here's the text I've dumped into the community profile for now:

A hub for the dazed and confused who always notice that More Joy Day (or International Blog Against Racism Week, or Yuletide sign-ups...) happened two days ago while you were napping. Please, if you have any thoughts, suggestions, enthusiasms, anything, let me know. How should we tag-wrangle? Should I shoot for a monthly compilation post? I've never run a comm before, so I'm eager for help and advice. Pimp like whoa. Post your ficathon. W00t.
Use it to note and promote your ficathons, fests and other events fannish or of interest to the fan community. Use it to keep track of what's going on.
Suggested (but not hard and fast) posting format:
Please check out the tag page, and tag liberally. The Yuletide obscure fandom fic exchange, for example, gets seven of them:event:yuletide(whew.)
fandom:multifandom
format:exchange
frequency:annual
medium:fanfiction
sign-up:2010 dec
due:2010 dec
Got questions, suggestions or concerns? I want them! Here's the welcome post, or reach me, Stulti, at stultiloquentia@yahoo.ca.

FYI, I have a list of all the SG-1 convention dates here and, considering I'm already coding in the SG-1 ficathon/etc. dates weekly, I'd be happy to help out over here!!

I'm sure you've thought about tagging posts by fandom so I'd like to know why you decided against it (if you don't mind answering, of course).
Finally, thanks for setting this community up. It's great!

2. The tagging system is kind of higglety-pigglety, which is my fault -- I should have been more anal about setting up a clear system at the outset. There *are* some fandom tags in the sidebar; feel free to add more as you need them. Or are you suggesting using colons to organize, i.e. andetc. Hm. That would be nice, wouldn't it. Any particular suggestions?
Thank you for piping up.

As for feeds I tried to see if somebody had made any but free accounts aren't allowed to do that over on LJ and that's all I have. If you have a paid LJ account you can do it or even create the feeds if they don't exist. I think it's at http://www.livejournal.com/syn/.

I realize you mostly take posts about fanfiction events, but can we post about fan conventions?
Thank you,
LA

I just wanted to pop over (from China Shop's Fandom Appreciation 2013, specifically) just leave this note for all the moderators on this community. I discovered this community back in 2012, during the Fandom Snowflake Challenge (that seriously brought this and so much else about Transformative Works into my life), and it's been a god send ever since. Today we're supposed to send positive feedback to fannish community moderators, challenge organisers, newsletter compilers or archivists.
I want to thank all of you, so much. Because of this community I've gotten to know so much more about whats going on in every corner of fandom I can in most given times. Where to find fandom-specific, and fandom-wide, everything's. I'm so endlessly grateful to all of you, and I just wanted to take this moment to let you all know. Your community is awesome, You are awesome, and it fills my world with starts and hearts.

Info on their site says that "SMASH! Sydney Manga and Anime Show is organised by SMASH Inc, an incorporated non-profit organisation whose aim is to create an open and affordable event for fans which encourages art, creativity and community involvement." It seems to me smash 15 is a pretty standard convention and, looking at the rules of the fanfic competition, it doesn't look like it's tied to attending the comm or any other direct commercial thing. Does that seem fair to you?

Sure, no problem! The more, the merrier! Might want to say this has been posted with permission so people know it's not spam or anything like that.
Best,

P.S. And thank you for asking first. You're awesome!

Would it be okay to post promo for an interest form for a fandom event that is still in the hypothetical/planning stages? I've got an event in the works and recently posted an interest form on Tumblr, but would like to get feelers out beyond just that site. If not that's totally fine!

Sure, no problem!
