The Union Army, also known as the Union or Yanks, was a fighting force during the American Civil War.
Background[edit]
The first land battle of the war happened near Philippi, Virginia, where on June 3, 1861, the Union planned a pre-dawn assault on the Confederate Army.[2] The Union fired artillery, waking up the Confederate soldiers, who retreated 45 miles to the south.[2] A battlefield cemetery was subsequently established in Philippi.[3]
A reenactment of a battle between Union forces and Confederate soldiers took place at Prickett's Fort.[4] If the Union participants are unsuccessful, the Union guide will state that "General Grant would be ashamed to call you soldiers."[1]
