Swimming is a gameplay mechanic featured in the Fallout Series.
Gameplay[edit]
Swimming allows the player character to move through and explore bodies of water.
By Game[edit]
Fallout 3[edit]
Swimming first appeared as a mechanic in Fallout 3. In Fallout 3, the player character can swim across rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water. While submerged, the player character's oxygen supply is limited, with drowning occurring if they remain underwater too long. Water in the Capital Wasteland is irradiated, causing radiation damage indicated by the Pip-Boy's Geiger Counter ticking.
Locations and content can be found underwater, such as a Submerged T-Rex in Point Lookout. A character in The Pitt, Mona, suffers from a skin condition she got from swimming in a nearby river.[1]
Fallout: New Vegas[edit]
Fallout: New Vegas retains similar mechanics to Fallout 3, with timed oxygen use and potential drowning if submerged too long. However, radiation is less common in the Mojave's bodies of water. Swimming can uncover underwater locations, such as the Sunken Sunset Sarsaparilla Truck. Fish can be seen swimming in Lake Mead. A rebreather can be equipped, granting unlimited oxygen while submerged or swimming underwater.
Fallout 4[edit]
In Fallout 4, swimming is consistent with prior titles. Submersion drains an oxygen meter, and swimming in irradiated water causes radiation damage over time. Unlike previous entries, wearing Power Armor enables the player to walk along the bottom of bodies of water rather than swim. This allows exploration of underwater areas without surfacing for air. Perks like Aquagirl and Aquaboy means player characters no longer take damage from swimming and can breathe underwater.
Fallout 76[edit]
Fallout 76 continues the established mechanics of swimming and diving. Like in Fallout 4, players in power armor cannot swim, instead sinking to the bottom. Quests such as the Tadpole Swimming Test involve swimming to marked buoys. [Fallout 76 Diseases|Diseases]] and Parasites can now be caught from bodies of water. Several types of fish and whales can be seen swimming in the Aquarium of the Atlantic. Outfits like the Cave Diving Suit allows the wearer to breathe underwater and grants immunity to water radiation and disease.
Notes[edit]
- There is an oxygen meter on the UI. Characters can only stay submerged for a limited duration before HP begins to deplete, causing death.
- Creatures can also swim, such as gecko.
- Beavers have transparent eyelids, protecting them while swimming underwater.[2]
- The Expert Radiation Suit description says, "Ever feel like swimming in a pool of radioactive waste?"
Appearances[edit]
Players can swim in Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and in Fallout 76.
