Hadley James was the director of the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works before the Great War.
Background[edit]
James led operations of the Department of Public Works, his responsibilities ranging from assigning employee seating arrangements, managing facility maintenance needs, and leading city reconstruction projects.[1][2]
One of his initiatives was replacing the historical Wabash Bridge with a new structure, copying the nearby 10th Street bridge to unify the city's skyline.[3] This decision was strongly opposed by the Pittsburgh Heritage Society, who both called for his resignation and sought assistance from county administrators to address the issue.
Phone messages are dictated to him via terminal, including a request from his wife to pick up milk and Cram on the way home and, a note from Miss Stevens, thanking him for lunch and wishing to confirm the same time the following week.[4]
