Welcome to Andale, the best little town in Virginia!Jack Smith

Andale is a location in the southern area of the Capital Wasteland in Fallout 3.

Background[edit]

The inhabitants of Andale comment on winning the "best town in the USA" award for "so many years running that they've lost count."[1][2] The town has an annual fair, where prizes are given for prepared dishes.[3] Jack Smith introduces the town as "the best little town in Virginia."[4] Despite the war, adults in town vote for and elect governors.[5] Bill Wilson states that Andale is a place to settle down and raise a family, but the "home owners association" dictates who is allowed to live there.[6]

The town was founded by four families who survived the war, resorting to cannibalism when their shelters ran out of food.[7][8] Jack Smith comments that the families have lived in the town for generations.[9] Old Man Harris warns the Lone Wanderer, telling them to leave the town as soon as they can due to the danger the individuals living here pose to visitors.[10] He states that although it looks normal and everyone is nice, it is only a trick.[11]

Layout[edit]

Andale is located directly south of the Fairfax Ruins and west of the Nuka-Cola Plant. The town is comprised of pre-War houses and a shack. They are all located on a street amid the ruins of other homes and a Red Rocket gas station.

Related Quests[edit]

Notes[edit]

  • Devouring a body when detected by either family will cause them to become hostile.
  • Having the Cannibal Perk replaces the Speech challenge with guaranteed success.
  • The Andale shed key to the Wilsons' shed can be found in the Wilsons' house, both downstairs on top of the radio, and beside the bed on a table in the upstairs bedroom. The key to the Smiths' basement is found in the upstairs bedroom of the Smiths' house, on a similar bedside table. Both keys can also be stolen from the men in the two families.
  • If the Lone Wanderer attacks and kills anyone in the two families before they discover that they are cannibals, they will receive negative Karma.

Appearances[edit]

Andale appears in Fallout 3.

Bugs[edit]

  • PCPC Upon first finding Andale, the residents will be in front of the Smiths' house facing towards it. Upon approach, Jack Smith will trigger the dialogue of you snooping around in the basement.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 After completion of the quest, when fast traveling to Andale, all NPCs stay hunched over and alert, still wielding their knives while walking around, even though they are no longer hostile. Conversation can be initiated, and while speaking, they will stand up straight again, but when they finish speaking, they hunch back over. They are also unable to enter any of the houses at such a time.

References[edit]

  1. Lone Wanderer: "Do you like living in Andale? "
Martha Wilson: "Are you joking? It's fantastic here! The best town in the USA! Has been for... why it's been so many years running that I've lost count!"
    (Martha Wilson/Dialogue)
  2. Linda Smith: "Well, hello! Welcome to Andale! Winner of the best town in the USA contest!"
    (Linda Smith/Dialogue)
  3. Jack Smith: "Linda's meatloaf is the best in the county. And her mince meat pie has won first prize at the town fair three years running. "
    (Jack Smith/Dialogue)
  4. Jack Smith: "Hello there, young lady! Good to meet you! Name's Smith, Jack Smith. Welcome to Andale, the best little town in Virginia! "
    (Jack Smith/Dialogue)
  5. Lone Wanderer: "Virginia? Virginia's been gone for 200 years."
Jack Smith: "Not here. Not in Andale, no sir/ma'am. The great Commonwealth of Virginia is alive and well. In fact, we just voted ourselves a new governor!"
    (Jack Smith's dialogue)
  6. Bill Wilson: "Why, it's a place to settle down and raise a family. Of course, we don't just let anyone in here. The home owners association is very clear on that."
    (Bill Wilson's dialogue)
  7. Jack Smith: "After the war, four families survived. They continued on just like we have. But when their shelters ran out of food, they need to eat something. Family is everything, my friend. I wouldn't expect a wasteland wanderer like you to understand."
    (Jack Smith/Dialogue)
  8. Lone Wanderer: "What's going to happen to the kids?"
Old Man Harris: "They'll stay here with me and I'll raise them myself. It's a shame that they have to grow up without their parents. But, to tell you the truth, it's a lot better than growing up with their parents, everything considered. Better an orphan than a cannibal, I guess?"
    (Old Man Harris' dialogue)
  9. Jack Smith: "I mean, I've got a family to take care of here. I've lived in Andale my whole life. And my father before me, and his father, and his father's father."
    (Jack Smith/Dialogue)
  10. Lone Wanderer: "Well, I haven't talked to anyone here but you. Are they friendly?"
Old Man Harris: "No! Well... yes. But it's all a trick. Don't you know anything? Did you just crawl out of a vault or something? Just about everyone in the wasteland knows to avoid Andale, and they're right to do it. People wander in here, and they don't wander back out."
    (Old Man Harris' dialogue)
  11. Lone Wanderer: "You know, there is something a bit "off" about them..."
Old Man Harris: "Of course there's something off about them, everyone knows to avoid Andale! The caravans know it, the Raiders know it, even the Radscorpions know it. Folks wander into this place, and they don't wander back out. Oh sure, it seems nice, a regular town of out time here, but don't let it fool you."
    (Old Man Harris' dialogue)
  12. Old Man Harris: "I married Gladys, just like every boy in Andale married the girl closest to his age. We had Linda and she grew up to marry Jack."
    (Old Man Harris' dialogue)
  13. Lone Wanderer: "What's wrong with that Harris guy?"
Martha Wilson: "Well, dad always was a bit off his rocker."
Lone Wanderer: "Wait... He's your dad?"
Martha Wilson: "Oh dear... I let that slip didn't I? He used to be. Until I got married. I can't really say much more than that."
    (Martha Wilson's dialogue)
  14. Jenny Wilson: "I know! His daddy and my daddy used to be brothers."
    (Jenny Wilson's dialogue)
  15. Junior Smith: "He keeps saying stuff to my mom about keeping the families going, and how when him and Mr. Wilson were brothers, they didn't want to get married."
    (Junior Smith's dialogue)
