Heterosexual relationship culture is so alien to me and I don’t know if it’s the fact I’m not cishet or the fact I’m autistic but I hear so many things that make me go “Am I insane or are they?”

There’s a lot of hate on widowers and I saw a woman say “You cannot compete with a dead woman.” which is perhaps a reasonable statement to say if he’s constantly comparing you to his dead partner but that wasn’t what the post was about. And I realized “Oh my God, these people genuinely feel like they’re constantly in competition with their spouse’s exes and the ex being dead makes them feel insecure that they cannot best her.”

There’s also been an uptick in the ‘men and women cannot be ‘just’ friends’ rhetoric which I feel like is extremely dangerous and reflects the rise of fascism and sexism. Some of these stories of women feeling threatened by their husband’s female best friend have some merit and others are like “I feel angry that my husband still talks to the girl he grew up next door to and she and her wife are invited to family gatherings and included in family photos sometimes. Am I right to be suspicious?” No. No you’re not. I cannot imagine being you and living with that high level of stress and paranoia and constant torment and jealousy about your husband having a positive relationship with anyone who isn’t you.

covington-shenanigans

okay look i know this isn't relevant to this post past the second paragraph but. here's the thing. the facts of the case are as follows:

1) I am widowed. my Beloved Wife of Blessed Memory(tm) died in 2019

2) I got together with my current partner about 18 months later

3) when I am committing acts of Foolishness my current partner loves to gesture at the sky to my dead wife, like "do you see this shit, my liege" and regularly says to me things like "[wife's name] was right about this" when my Foolishness inevitably comes back to bite me in the ass

4) this happens. all the time

more importantly:

5) my current partner is on tumblr

6) they love to incessantly send me posts

WHICH MEANS:

7) they just sent me this post with this commentary:

hi hello so anyways I read this post and said to myself skill issue. I'm not in competition with my partner's dead wife, I'm ganging up on him with her. hope all those women get well soonALT

8) they really, really are ganging up on me with her. god help us if there's an afterlife and those two ever actually meet. "eternal rest" my ass, i will never know peace again

hey white people . if u dont know how to pronounce an ethnic persons name *google it* or if its someone ur talking directly to *ask them*. dont fucking do that "erm i dont know how to pronounce but __" or "im gonna butcher this haha" or "im not even gonna bother trying" . ur not funny. do u know what poc think when they hear u saying that ? u sound like a loser asshole and we dont want to spend time with u . im so fucking tired of watching youtube videos about media from my country and hearing those phrases. im tired of people saying that to my face . i respect someone who clearly looked it up and is tryong but says my name wrong over someone who just goes with whatever bad first guess they had without trying. u have too many resources at ur disposal to keep doing this. for the love of god just Fucking Try. if ur confused Just Try.

I highly recommend Forvo.com, the website where native speakers of a language contribute their time and voices to read words and names in their own language. It is a fantastic way to expand your world, open up your ears, and it's way more likely to nab a hit than just googling.

vampire-loving-vampire

wow , I didn't know this existed, thanks so much for sharing the resource !! I will absolutely be using it now too 🖤

hey chat anyone else starting to notice people are actively conflating being cluttered and/or unorganized with hoarding

afarewelltokings

like i get that having issues with hoarding in itself is a spectrum. but idk having grown up in a hoarding situation there's something that feels weird seeing people show off the "hoarding" they grew up in and it's just very obviously a low income/lower-middle income family in the USA who either can't afford to buy the storage furniture needed or who got very quickly forced to downsize due to economic issues so they're trying to make things work. or it's just someone with a collection.

there's a very big difference between "i don't have the time/energy/money needed to get things around me properly organized" and going back to the thrift store to buy things back after someone did you a favor of donating things you don't/will never use. your living space doesn't need to look like you're prepping for a surprise-open-house at any moment

Do you ever lie awake wondering how the heck Gimli knows what a nervous system is

systlin

Clearly dwarves have medical knowledge far more advanced than that of the other races.

wired: legolas took gimli to valinor to prove the world was flat after arguing with him about it for decades

jemthecrystalgem

Sorry it’s what to elves

dvandom

So, in Tolkein lore, the world was originally flat, with most of the land in the middle (hence Middle Earth).  But the Numenorians (men who were rewarded with their own Atlantis-equivalent island for service in the first big war against Melkor, but eventually Power Corrupts etc) tried to invade the uttermost west which was basically Elf Heaven.  To put an end to that sort of thing, the creator of the world Bent The World and made it a sphere…but left elves able to treat it like a flat disk.  So elves can sail west and reach Elf Heaven, but a man or dwarf or hobbit who sails west will eventually wrap around to the east coast of Middle Earth.

Did you ever get the chicken pox?

No

Had the vaccine

thatjewishteen

i’m not even kidding, until i was like nine or ten years old, i thought the chickenpox was one of those imaginary diseases people used to tell us about to scare us into washing our hands and staying away from sick people. i don’t know a single person around my age who has ever had chickenpox

osterby

I literally do not know if I got it or not. When I was like eight (long before the vaccine existed) it went through the church and everyone got it, and I wrestled with a kid who'd have been contagious at the time. I got a single weird bump that could as easily be chicken pox as a bug bite (mom insisted it wasn't and that I needed to go play with the poxy kids some more, but nothing more came of it).

So either I was exposed to chicken pox repeatedly without ever getting it, or I got the world's least symptomatic case of it,

I should, uh, really look into that shingles vaccine in the next decade....

opalsong

I thought FOR SURE I'd never had the chicken pox. Despite my parents best efforts. And I mean that completely truthfully. Before the vaccine existed, parents would organize chicken pox parties - when one kid they knew got it, they suddenly had playdates with every other kid in the community. Because everyone wanted to get infected as young as possible. Now, thank gosh, the vaccine exists and we don't have to do it that way anymore. But anyway, despite my parents best efforts I never got the chicken pox - no symptoms, no itching, nothing. So when I went into health care, they made sure we were up on our vaccines and I was like "for sure I need the chicmen pox one" but the school insisted I go for blood work. I was SHOCKED when it came back with antibodies. Like, WHEN!? When did this happen?? (The real answer is thst I was obviously non-symptomatic. But that doesn't stop me feeling like my world shifted 2 cm to the left that day.)

Which is all to say....technically yes, but also kinda no?

iplaywithstring

I was born in the 80s. I had chicken pox twice, and was the youngest case of shingles my Dr ever saw when I was 12. Luckily I haven't had shingles again. I was very glad my kids could be vaccinated to lower my risk.

And when I was a kid and everyone got it? I knew kids who were hospitalized and needed feeding tubes - did you know you can get it in your throat?

the-seelie-court-official

i had pox and the vaccine. So..

vaccine and a mild case i still have a scar on my shoulder

i think some of you dont like narratives or stories or characters i think you just like fanfiction tropes

taahko

protagonists can and will be sexist, racist, insensitive, cruel, stupid, etc, especially towards the beginning of a story. these are called character flaws and they are a surprise tool that will lead to narrative fulfillment later

mapswithoutwyoming

And sometimes "narrative fulfillment" doesn't mean "the character overcomes their flaws" or even "the antihero is punished for their flaws"! sometimes it means the narrative says "wow was that fucked up or what? anyway i'm rod sterling"

8one6

I don't think the current "depiction = endorsement" crowd will ever be able to understand this.
