I am ashamed to say my reading last year was mostly composed of Japanese light novels of no particular intellectual or moral value. However, they were all very fun!

• 1 large onion
• 2 sticks celery
• 1 large carrot
• 4 cloves garlic
• 2 Tb Olive oil
• 1 ½ tsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped
• 1 ½ tsp dried oregano
• 1 ½ tsp dried marjoram
• 1 ½ tsp dried sage
• 1 ¼ lb red potatoes
• 6 cups homemade turkey stock
• 15 oz can diced tomatoes
• 1 ½ tsp salt
• ¼ to ½ fresh ground pepper
• 2 Tb butter
• 8 to 10 oz cooked turkey wing meat

Dice the onions, celery, carrot and garlic. Pre-heat the olive oil in a 4 quart pot or dutch oven and sweat the mirepoix until onions are translucent, 5-7 minutes. Add all herbs and cook with vegetables for 1 minute. Add turkey stock, cubed potatoes, can of diced tomatoes and salt, bring to boil. Simmer for 30 minutes, then mix in butter and pepper. Turn off heat, add turkey, serve.

DISCUSSION: Yes, that much salt. I don't salt my stock and the potatoes just suck it up like little sponges. If it feels like a little much to you, add 1 tsp and then taste how flat it is. If you're using store bought, of course start with no salt and adjust from there. The butter! I know the butter is weird, but it just goes really well with the potatoes. You might try subbing in turkey fat too.

Went up to Milwaukee to see the Monsters play a good defensive game to a 1-0 shutout win over the Admirals.

A couple a things: the beginning of the game was very, idk small town patriotic socialization time. They had a boy scout troop sing God Bless America and THEN the national anthem was played by the local high school band. 100% offense, I've been to better ECHL opening ceremonies.

The refs just put away their whistles this game????? There was A single penalty the whole game, DESPITE the Monsters playing some pretty darn dirty pool. I saw our 111 PIM guy take a couple of punches at an Admiral right after they were fighting over the puck. Okay, there another penalty on the Admirals when they tripped Sonny Milano on a breakaway (SOOOOOOONYYYYYYYYYYYY!) but there was only 5 seconds left, so I feel it doesn't count.

That single penalty the Monsters took? Was b/c Forsberg threw the most epic goalie tempter tantrum I have EVER seen. There was some sort of scrum around the net, I couldn't quite see what was going on, but it cleared up a little and Forsberg is P I S S E D. He yells at the ref, takes his helmet off, yells more, then LIFTS the goal off it's pegs and THROWS one of the pegs to center ice. It was AMAZING. And I think the guy who served the penalty for him was also the dude who scored the only goal of the game, Dalpe.

FORSBERG HAD 27 SAVES, one of which ROLLED off his back down his arm out of the net. Like, he maybe earned that tantrum.

And last, woooooooow, I felt like a Protestant at the Vatican. I think I was maybe the only Monsters fan in that whole arena - definitely in my section! I already thought goalie chants were rude as hell, but BOY are they obnoxious in person. Tho I did hear one of the Obnoxious Yelling Guys a few rows up ask what icing was. :D HAH, U sir are merely a drunken peon, not a Real Hockey Fan.

BUT!!! It was super fun, and only an hour away on the highway, and I think just a hair under $75 for two seats right behind the penalty box and parking. All and all, a very nice night out!

ETA: I was informed that there was a slashing penalty also in the third like the other two. Naught came of it, so I can see why it slipped out of my brain.)

My mother got her OTHER hip replaced (she's two for two now,) and I'm going back up to Chicago from helping her out tomorrow on the cattle car train. 11 hours, 3 trains, two layovers, and no chance to grab real food anywhere along the way! Good thing I packed lunch. Read more... )

The layers are coffee, coconut, and pandan. The coffee is generic bottle latte from Aldi, and the coconut is coconut milk I picked up from our local Filipino shop when I had to go there anyway to pick up the pandan extract. Well, 'pandan extract', I looked at the label after I bought it and it's artificial flavoring with dye added. Ah well. Read more... )

THIS POP IS GREAT, A+, HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

I’m actually very fond of Artificial Melon Flavor as it shows up in Japanese candy and drinks in general, but this is extra aromatic. The color actually makes the drink extra attractive to me, it’s more appealing than the clear versions of melon pop like ramune.

I got it at Mitsuwa Chicago, so I’d guess go look for it at your local Japanese grocery.

So I owed 24 cookies to a hockey buddy for loosing a bet to her (If Dallas was gonna sweep Minnesota in the playoffs) and I made a batch of oatmeal-raisin and split it between them and 'Cookie Day' at BFBright's work.

He came home today and said my cookies won first prize! :D However I was not aware it was going to be a contest! /o\ Apparently he didn't either, but I might have been a bit more careful with that batch if I knew it was going to be judged.

According to the internet, it may be a few things.

- It's too damn humid right now, don't bother

- I poured the syrup into the gelatin too fast

- I over beat them

So I guess I jigger some stuff around and try try again.

Some cursory googling indicates my rosemary is getting pot-bound, that is, the roots are growing in circles at the bottom of the pot. So, some adventures in re-potting are planned. I bought a pot that’s two inches bigger all the way around (and square!) and some soil, and I’ll take a stab at this tomorrow when it’s a little warmer out on the porch. I may have to trim the rootball (eek!), so I’m a little nervous.
