As a sideman he was a member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet and worked extensively with leading players from the late 1950s onwards. He is notable for working in a number of jazz styles; from hard bop to latin, and in 1970 co-founded the fusion group Weather Report. As a bandleader his solo albums “Juju”, “Speak no Evil” (both 1964) and “Adam’s Apple” (1966) are amongst the most enduring jazz records of the 20th century and demonstrate his skill as a composer. Shorter was a committed Buddhist.
