I know its not that easy, but I wish a police department would keep tabs on how many of these shootings are truly random. According to the dialogue, this personal crime was brought on by some debt. A lot of the property crime is anonymous, a lot of the personal crime isn't, but what share?

The schoolteacher thing is just crazy. It makes me want to advocate for a whole lot more than expulsion (freedom). I'd advocate for a little more like corporal punishment (permanent disfiguring injury).

Probably almost none. The closest thing that's reported with any frequency at all is non-random crime in which the shooter misses and hits someone clearly uninvolved. Even that doesn't happen enough for a Center City white boy like me who only occasionally rides through Bad Neighborhoods to bother worrying about it. I'll do my worrying about the taxi drivers who are unclear on the whole concept of "lanes".

I don't think it's useful to even pretend to advocate things that are both wrong and ineffective.

There was a story recently pointing out that when people are let out of jail around here, they're given whatever clothes they were wearing when they went in, a token, and 60 cents. Because that's all it takes to become a Productive Member of Society. We spend tens of thousands of dollars locking them up, and $1.90 on them when they get out. It also pointed out that parole officers only work 9 to 5. Assuming you're lucky enough to get a job at all, you might lose it if you can't switch shifts for your parole meetings. As public policy, all of that is moronic and irrational, but it continues because people believe "tough on crime" bullshit.
