I am someone who finds jokes about the disabled appalling and, in general, finds the idea of mass media gossip about celebrity misbehavior distasteful...but I have to admit to hypocrisy when it comes to Fred Phelps.

The man clearly is mentally ill, and yet I can't help being fascinated. I would be disgusted if the amount of mockery coverage he earns were given to anyone suffering such extreme dementia or a family so clearly twisted due to internal abuse. Except with the Phelps clan I can't help but laugh at some of the brilliance displayed in counter protests and respect the groups that take his presence as a reason to celebrate their own pride in being what he (and thus his family) hates.

I take great satisfaction from how the Bay Area (as well as other communities) have made his visit a fundraiser for their causes, Thank you world for being awesome in the face of such nastiness.

Of these counter protest signs, 3, 18, and 30 had me in giggles Though I am not sure why I found it side-splittingly hilarious that in 25, the WBC member is wearing a Twilight shirt.
