"On 4th May, our in-foal mare, Texas, suffered a devastating injury after impaling herself on a metal pole left by fencing contractors.
The photos don’t do it justice – the wound ran from her chest, under her “armpit”, and around her shoulder. It was as if she’d been carved like a chicken. By God’s grace, no major arteries were severed.
Our local vets were initially hesitant to stitch the wound – it was so deep that I could fit my entire hand inside with room to spare. But with persistence, they managed to place numerous stitches, which held for about a week. At that point, it became a race against time.
A dear friend gave us some Equi-Phage Gel. I applied this seemingly simple gel to the gaping wound every hour for 14 days while keeping Texas stabled. On 26th May, I cautiously led her out to the paddock. Honestly, I wasn’t sure the wound could withstand the movement, let alone being outside all day. But I continued applying the gel morning and night.
Today, there’s barely a trace of the horrific injury. There’s no proud flesh, no muscle or ligament damage, and incredibly, she didn’t lose her foal."
