GIRLS THAT'S FUCKING TERRIFYING,, PLEASE FACTORY RESET YOUR PHONES GET NEW ONES IF YOU HAVE TO GET AN INDEPENDENT SIM card WHAT IS HAPPENING

I'M BEGGING YOU

THEY CANT DO THIS TO YOU PLEASE

that is stalking

its stalking when it happens to children also btw

"My mum won't let me" Okay I am 30 goddamn years old and I still have this thought so let's walk through it together.

What's the worst that can happen if you do it anyway? Genuinely. The literal worst. Catastrophise about it with me for a sec.

Will your mum yell at you? You're an adult. Yelling at fellow adults is Not Okay Actually. (Yelling at kids is also not okay but let's take this one step at a time.) If your mum is yelling at you, a fellow adult, she's the one being weird and out of line. You asked your friend and they said so too (me. I'm the friend.)

Will she cut off your phone plan? That would be a problem. Can you look into whether you can afford to switch to a new plan she doesn't have access to? Most phone companies will let you port your number over pretty easily.

Will she cut you off financially? Run the numbers again. Can you afford for that to happen? If the answer is no, that's okay, I believe you and I know you're making the best decision for your own well-being that you can in the moment. If there's anything you can do to make it more affordable, I do suggest doing that, though.

Will she be physically violent, inclusive of breaking stuff that belongs to you? That’s assault. That's a crime. It's not okay for her to do that and she almost certainly knows it.

Will she stop talking to you? Honestly I gotta say at this point that's not sounding like a bad outcome. It sucks. It really really sucks and I'm sorry if that's a choice you're having to make, but take it from someone who's been there and done that: when someone who is being abusive to you (stalking is abuse! Yelling at you is abuse! Threatening to cut off your funds if you don't do what they want forever is abuse! Breaking your stuff or physically hurting you is abuse!) decides of their own volition to cut you off, it hurts for a hot minute, and then you suddenly realise that you can breathe, and it feels so. Goddamn. Amazing.

We'll try together, okay?

many will attempt to "end" the hug after only five to ten seconds of holding you. crucially, this is where the claws come into play

So what I think is that there's this default belief in patriarchy that men are superior to women and therefore the "masculine" sphere is superior to the "feminine" sphere. And so, as feminists have fought to expand the number of allowable female activities, men (on the aggregate over generations) have retreated from those activities because they're now seen as "feminine", and so partaking in them is incommensurate with their belief in their own superiority. And, unfortunately, as this has progressed, this has resulted in a lot of men sectioning themselves off from, frankly, everything that actually makes being alive worthwhile. It's a misery spiral, and the only way out is to abandon male supremacy.

imagine if to report a spambot as spam you had to write a response of 100+ characters on what they were posting and another response of 100+ characters on why the thing they were posting counted as spam and then you had to pick a specific link to report rather than just the whole blog. transparently ridiculous. but apparently necessary to report something as a hate speech violation

did you have to use that photo for that

i mean good on them...? still paired with that image thats uh. interesting

I respect the fuck out of this. The whole site is trying its hardest to go against every selling point the dog robots have as its selling points.

The dog robots are supposed to be autonomous, threehalves is explicitly only for being piloted by a human. The giant horns make it difficult for this machine to enter through doorways, and that is the point. Coupled with the built-in weak points, it is very easy to disable this thing, so it can't be used by the police or the military effectively.

OP alluded to how unsettling the machine looks, and I believe that it was a concious decision; the robot dogs have garnered sympathy due to their apperance, which makes it easier for the police to morally justify their use. This thing? You're not gonna get many people to sympathise with it. The only people who would are monster and-or robot fuckers, and I believe these circles generally understand that a machine cannot be trusted (though of course many would willingly approach it for pervert reasons (positive) knowing full well it's a bad idea).

oh yeah i saw everyone on tiktok freaking out about "if it can't harm humans why does it come with instructions to kill it" it's a safety feature in case of an emergency or malfunction where it needs to be quickly deactivated. "why is it so big and demonic why does it look like that" it's a safety feature so it can do dangerous labor and so you don't feel bad about killing it. "it was designed not to be able to follow you through doors?? why the fuck would it do that that's scary" it's a safety feature so you can't get cornered or have the person piloting it misuse it. "it doesn't have hands but it can attach CHAINSAWS to its limbs???" it's MADE TO WITHSTAND WILDFIRES IT'S NOT GONNA USE IT ON YOU "this thing gives me such bad vibes i do not trust it" GOOD!!! IT'S A ROBOT!!! IT IS A TOOL!!! IT'S A REALLY BIG AND COMPLICATED MACHINE THAT IS DESIGNED TO GO IN DANGEROUS ENVIRONMENTS WHICH WOULD MEAN IT COULD POTENTIALLY MALFUNCTION! USE YOUR BRAIN!!!

admittedly i do think that picture of it standing in the doorway with glowing white eyes is like comically frightening but it's SUPPOSED to be so you don't feel bad for it or approach it

The above posters make excellent points about all of it! But there’s one part I want to emphasize:

“OP alluded to how unsettling the machine looks, and I believe that it was a concious decision; the robot dogs have garnered sympathy due to their apperance, which makes it easier for the police to morally justify their use.”

I’ve been around those robot dogs due to my dayjob in software; it took under five minutes to go from “nope, that’s unnerving and wrong” to “awww, weird looking doggo!” I don’t know for sure if they’ve been programmed to imitate some friendly dog behaviors or if that was a special thing for demo purposes, but … yeah.

Which is why I like the robot centaur.

A friendly PSA for everyone migrating from Wattpad to AO3!

Commenting Etiquette

  • No Unsolicited Concrit: Authors post fanworks for free as a hobby. Unless an author explicitly asks for constructive criticism in their notes, keep comments positive and critique-free.
  • Don't Like, Don't Read (DLDR): If a story, relationship, or trope bothers you, hit the back button. Leaving negative comments over subjective preferences breaks core fandom norms.
  • Phrase Update Requests Politely: Demanding "Update soon!" can feel transactional. Pair your excitement with appreciation for the current chapter (e.g., "Loved this chapter, can't wait to see where the story goes!").
  • Short Comments & Emojis Are Welcomed: You don't need to write an essay! Leaving a kudos or a single heart emoji in the comment section is a totally valid and appreciated form of comment.

Tagging & Relationships

  • Accurate Warning Tags: Always select the appropriate Major Archive Warnings or explicitly mark "Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings."
  • Distinguish / vs &: Use / strictly for romantic or sexual pairings (Character A/Character B). Use & exclusively for platonic or familial relationships (Character A & Character B).

Site Rules & Features

  • No Monetization: AO3 is a non-profit archive run entirely on donations. Selling physical copies anywhere on your profile or story text violates TOS and risks account suspension.
  • Public vs. Private Bookmarks: Bookmarks are public by default, and authors can see everything written in them. If you use bookmarks for personal ratings, critical notes, or reading progress, remember to check the Private box.

AND DON´T USE AI.

Edit: if you do use ai... tag it

This! And AO3 allows original works as well as fanfiction, meta, essays, fanart, podfic and other fanworks, but not recommendation lists. It's an archive not a social network.

Quickly adding "no warnings apply" and "author chose not to use warnings" are VERY DIFFERENT THINGS. No warnings means that the story contains no graphic violence, no underage sexual situations, no non-consenting sexual situations, AND no major character death, not that it does and you don't want to warn people about it. If your story contains any of those please DO NOT use the "contains no warnings" tag. That tag is for stories that expressly do not contain the big four warnings.

Instead, use the "Author chose not to warn" tag if you want to have those things but don't want to spoil the surprise of them. Choosing not to use warnings is the only proper way to do this. Tags on AO3 are not spoiler tags, they're archival tags and content warnings. The big four (listed above) are the ones you HAVE to either tag for or expressly choose not to tag for. Learning the difference between these two tags can help prevent you getting in trouble.

You can also use Chose Not To Warn when none of the big four warnings apply. Indeed, if you really don't want your readers to guess whether one of the fic's major characters will survive a cliffhanger chapter ending, then it might help to tag some of your fics CNTW when nothing in the fic ever suggests any of the big four warnings might be in play.

If you aren't sure whether to tag one of the big four warnings because you're not sure whether what's in it fic counts, or when you're tagging Dubious Consent or Ambiguous/Open Ending or etc because it's supposed to be unclear whether one of the big four warnings applies, then CNTW is one of your best friends.

Your other best friend as soon as you get to know them—and I mean the general "you" here to include quite a few people who have been on AO3 more than ten years as well as all y'all who have been on AO3 less than ten days—is AO3's own explanation of what each warning means and when you should or shouldn't use it. The phrase "use your judgment" appears a lot in this section of the FAQ, but even just knowing what some of the common edge cases are makes using your judgment much easier to do.

Learning how the platform works before posting is an excellent plan. AO3 isn't a blank slate for newcomers to bend to their whim. It's an existing community space, and it should be treated thusly.

When you move to a new neighborhood, you do not start out by telling your neighbors that they need to relandscape their yards to match your vision. That will get you uninvited to all the backyard BBQs.

Also “No Monetization” includes things like Ko-Fi or GoFundMe links. If it is a link to anything that deals with money, then it’s monetizing under Ao3’s rules (and also against US law where Ao3 is based). It doesn’t matter the reason. Whether it’s “pay me for the next chapter” or “send some money to my friend who is struggling”, it will get your fic taken down

I hate to say "some of you don't go outside," but fucking Christ, dude

Ouuhh I see the water it’s right there on the post,, I’m so thirsty ouyghhhhhw just one sip for me ooouuuuuu

Girl, what are you talking about? Are you feeling alright?

Btw the heat *is* why we see water that's not really there, but mirages aren't exactly hallucinations so much as optical illusions:

It's just the changing density of the air refracting light weirdly, so it looks like there's a reflection of the sky on the ground, which our brains often interpret as a pool of water. It can also happen upwards instead of downwards, especially at sea, when the air is much colder near the surface and a warm front appears above it:

Which, btw, is one possible explanation for ghost ship sightings, so that's fun :)

Yeap. That's how the Effetto Fata Morgana gappens

If you drive on a straight road in the summer you can see mirages pretty easily.

Here's Fata Morgana

I need this study

It looks like it's Anarchist Direct Actions: A Challenge for Law Enforcement. It was published in 2004

It's worth pointing out that cops in the US adapted to these problems through using grand juries to cast wide nets and do punitive fishing expeditions in the wake of any serious suspected left-wing actions.

Here's how it works:

Someone starts a fire at an army draft office.

The cops look through their files for anyone who might be in the political orbit of someone who'd want to do that. People picked up at protests, for drug charges, vandalism, anyone who is already on their radar. They look into their known associates, anyone they live with, anyone they drink with.

Then they start subpoenaing these people for a grand jury summons. They give you immunity (but only for the matter of the grand jury!) so that you can't exercise the fifth amendment against self incrimination. If you say nothing, they can imprison you almost indefinitely for contempt of court. If they catch you in a lie, that's criminal perjury.

They'll ask you for information on everyone you know. Obviously they'll ask about their involvement in any crimes, but they're casting a wide net. Who knows who, where do they hang out, who talked to who about what and when. They'll ask you to spill interpersonal stuff, whether anyone is cheating on someone, whether people have substance abuse problems or embarrassing personal issues, if anyone is closeted, anything they consider dirt. Anyone you name is gonna get subpoenaed and they'll be asked for all this information on everyone they know, including you, and although you have immunity from your own testimony, you don't get immunity from each others.

Assuming you didn't personally do anything they can prosecute you for in the matter of the grand jury, they'll go after you based on what they know. The cops will arrest you on any little thing they have suspicion of, even if they know they can't prosecute you, just so that they can keep you in jail for a few days while you miss two shifts at work and your friends have to scramble to raise bail. They'll leak any embarrassing info that comes out, to your boss or your family or even the local press. Whatever they can do to make your life a little harder.

They will lean fucking hard on anyone who is involved in the scene but had second thoughts or felt like they were dragged into something they never wanted to do in the first place by their friends. The cops will say 'do you want to get your life ruined by people who did something stupid over something you barely even believe in' and sometimes that's a very compelling argument! If people have dependents or kids who they think won't be looked after if they go to prison, there's a lot of pressure to cooperate.

It's important to note two things:

1) Based on the ratio of actual prison sentences to maximum possible sentences for the charges, it's better for people not to cooperate with the jury both individually and as a group. People who talk still get sentenced, with the information they helped provide.

2) These aren't surgical strikes, they're an artillery barrage designed to destroy infrastructure and send people running for cover. Cops don't want you to have friends, they don't want you to hang out and have fun, they don't want you getting or providing food or shelter through anything you can't get fired from. They don't want committed direct-action people swimming freely through a sea of friendly people. They're not scared of the flower, they're scared of the soil that grows it.

If you're just learning about this, some of the other questions you might ask yourself next are: - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Aruba? - Why the fuck are there even 4 US military bases in Australia? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in the Bahamas? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Bahrain? - Why the fuck are there even 3 US military bases in Belgium? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Bulgaria? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Chagos archipelago apparently aka "British Indian Territory"? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Cuba? (this is of course Guantanamo bay, which is just straight up an illegal occupation of a foreign country to host a US torture prison) - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Djibouti? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Egypt? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Estonia? - Why the fuck are there even 3 US military bases in Greece? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Greenland? - Why the fuck are there even 6 US military bases in Germany? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in St. Helena? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Honduras? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Hungary? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Iceland? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Iraq? (when the Iraqi government keeps demanding that the US leave the country) - Why the fuck are there even 7 US military bases in Italy? - Why the fuck are there even 8 US military bases in Japan, if you exclude the several bases on Okinawa? It's 13 including the ones on Okinawa. - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Jordan? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Kenya? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Kosovo? - Why the fuck are there even 5 US military bases in Kuwait? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Latvia? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Lithuania? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in the Marshall Islands? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Norway? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Oman? - Why the fuck are there even 9 US military bases in the Philippines? - Why the fuck are there even 5 US military bases in Papua New Guinea? - Why the fuck are there even 5 US military bases in Poland? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Portugal? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Qatar? - Why the fuck are there even 3 US military bases in Romania? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Saudi Arabia? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in Singapore? - Why the fuck is there even a US military base in El Salvador? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Somalia? - Why the fuck are there even 8 US military bases in South Korea? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Spain? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Syria? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in Turkiye? - Why the fuck are there even 2 US military bases in the United Arab Emirates? - Why the fuck are there even 5 US military bases in the United Kingdom? Note: This list (that i got from this website cause their data was pretty recent and they had it in a handy list form) does not even seem to include things like the military airbase in the Netherlands where the americans keep nuclear bombers, or shannon airfield in ireland that the americans get to use freely for their genocide in Palestine, and used for their wars in afghanistan and iraq, so this list seems to be very far from complete.

Also: Ghost talking about Uldren in the D1 quest flavor texts because i think it's really funny that he complains about him at every opportunity
