Science

The Endurance22 science team brought together sea ice scientists, oceanographers, meteorologists and marine engineers to research the Antarctic sea ice, furthering our understanding of environmental changes in the surrounding Weddell Sea, whilst also providing operational data that assisted in finding the wreck of the Endurance. The data gathered from this scientific research will also help to improve future sea ice navigation. View the full Science Report.

Environment

The scientific research conducted during the Expedition will contribute to a better understanding of the environment. A priority for the Expedition is to minimise its own impact on the environment. As part of the Expedition’s permit application process to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust has submitted an Initial Environmental Evaluation of the environmental impact of the Expedition. View the Endurance22 IEE document.

The Evaluation concluded that provided a number of control measures are put in place then the identified unavoidable and potential environmental impacts of the Expedition are likely to have no more than a minor or transitory impact on the Weddell Sea environment.

Following the review of the IEE and a wide range of other information supplied by the FMHT, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) issued Endurance22 an Expedition permit to enter the Antarctic Treaty Area on 20 January 2022. View the permit.
