What she describes, reminds me pretty much a lot of why I was seeking out fanfics initially (and no, I swear it was not the porn *g*):
questioning who we are, pushing the limits of our identities, and re-interpretation of every canon set in stone.
Ewa Stachniak has crossed more than one border in her lifetime. Born in Poland she now lives in Canada, her books blur the boundaries between history and literature and she is also one of the few writers who explicitly set out to write "herstory". "It is a natural consequence of my need to rethink Polish history from my own, female, perspective. I regard his/herstory as a narrative in which we are constantly questioning who we are. In our answers we do not only shape our relationship with the past and influence the present, we also discover the conditions and limits of our identity. This definition of history postulates the relativity of experience and creates a constant need for fresh interpretations of the past, particularly ones that differ from the more traditional perspectives. And we have inherited plenty of these: from lessons in school, university lectures, political confusions, and on to the stories of our parents and grand parents. These are not fixed values, they have their limitations. And this is why they deserve to be re-evalated, revised or supplemented with other, forgotten, overlooked voices, also ones from outside."

I totally came looking for the porn!
which fandom was your first??
me, actually, the first fanfics that I had read, they were not the ones I was seeking out.
they came to me, and I did not even know back then, that they were called fanfics :D
I think, I started to subscribe to those German fanmags at the age of 11 or 12, and they had those fanstories in it, and I just went along and read them, and thought, Oh that is cool.
But of course, they were all PG /Gen fics.
and later, I was just desperately seeking infos on the Show "the Pretender", and stumbled along on fanfics and fandom, and it was still all PG/gen.
but once you find one fandom, obviously, you wanna know more about your other old show loves, and that is how I found HL slash, and there, NOW THERE WAS PORN!
lots of torture and porn *G*
Re: which fandom was your first??
Tangent: Have you ever read this - it is the most brilliant account of a fangirl's introduction to fandom ever written!
LOL, that poor girl
thanks for the link!
I wasn't much dumbfounded by finding Methos/Duncan slash, but that was probably coz I never saw their relationship on the show as subtext.
Even as a teenager, even never had any gay friends before going to university, the introduction of Methos to the show was all but like a romance, Mi Casa Et Su Casa, romantic stroll with Ducan along the Seine...
But I guess, with any other show, I might have been more surprised.
For example, Mulder/Krycek? I would have raised an eyebrow, and scrunch my face, coz I was shipping Scully/Mulder..
