scericge
Old English
editEtymology
editUncertain. Perhaps an alteration of earlier *sċēawiċġe (compare Old English sċēawere (“actor, clown”)), equivalent to sċēawian (“to show”) + -iċġe. Alternatively, perhaps an alteration of an earlier *sċerniċġe, where the first element is derived from Proto-West Germanic *skern (“fun, play, sport, joking, mockery, jest”) (compare Old Saxon skirno, skernio, skirno (“actor”), Old High German skerno, skernio, skirnio (“joker, actor, clown”).
