An early borrowing from Spanish reloj (“clock, watch, timepiece”). Compare Tausug lilus. Doublet of relo.
While the shift from ⟨j⟩, pronounced /ʃ/ in Early Modern Spanish, of the final letter to Tagalog /s/ was expected, the retention of the initial /r/ is irregular, as very early Spanish loanwords more often corresponds to Tagalog /d/ or /l/, as in *dilos or *lilos. This may suggest a transitional borrowing, occurring late enough to preserve /r/ but early enough to reflect variation in the realization of final ⟨j⟩. Even into the 19th century, Spanish maintained variating forms such as in Spanish relox.
