From Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *qiŋəʀ (loud, unpleasant noise), doublet of ingar. Compare Ilocano ingar (growl), Pangasinan ingal (noise), Hanunoo ingay (noise), Cebuano ingog (piercing sound), and Tagalog ingay.
