- two
- žiť ako dva holúbky ― to live like lovebirds (literally, “to live like two little pigeons”)
- byť medzi dvoma mlynskými kameňmi ― to be between a rock and a hard place (literally, “to be between two millstones”)
- tárať dve na tri ― to talk nonsense (literally, “to babble two on three”)
- zabiť dve muchy jednou ranou ― to kill two birds with one stone (literally, “to kill two flies with one blow”)
- sedieť na dvoch stoličkách ― to try to have it both ways (literally, “to sit on two chairs”)
- človek dvoch tvárí ― a two-faced person (literally, “a person of two faces”)
- hriať si dve želiezka v ohni ― to have two irons in the fire (literally, “to warm two little irons in the fire”)
- urobiť niečo raz-dva ― to do something in a heartbeat (literally, “to do something once-two”)
- mám len dve ruky ― I can't do everything at once (literally, “I have only two hands”)
- Na lavičke v parku sedeli dvaja starí priatelia. ― Two old friends were sitting on a bench in the park.
- Kúpil som dve fľaše vína a dve kilá jabĺk. ― I bought two bottles of wine and two kilos of apples.
Usage notes
edit- Unlike the numerals 5 and above, the numeral dva is always fully declined and the noun must agree in case, gender, and number (e.g., dvaja chlapi in the masculine personal nominative). Likewise, when the numeral dva is part of the subject of a sentence, the verb must instead agree with the plural subject (e.g., dvaja chlapi prišli).
- The numeral dva is the only cardinal number, with the exception of jeden and the related forms oba and obidva, that maintains two separate nominative and accusative non-virile forms: the form dva is used with masculine inanimate nouns, while the form dve is used for both feminine and neuter nouns. For all other cardinal numerals from three upwards, a single form is used for all non-virile genders.
- In the instrumental case, the form dvomi was until recently considered a non-standard or colloquial variant.[1] In modern standard Slovak, however, it has analogically achieved the same status as the historically original dual form dvoma. A similar shift had happened earlier in the numeral three, where the form tromi is now considered a fully standard alternative to the original form troma.[2]

- The neuter nominative/accusative/vocative form dvȃ is a consequence of common loss of dual of neuter nouns. The form therefore binds with plural forms and is colloquial:
- dve okni ― two windows (formally)
- dva okna ― two windows (colloquially)
