Etymology

edit

Borrowed from Vulgar Latin, from Latin argentum (silver). The modern form is possibly borrowed from Italian argento (silver), whereas the older form rgjand was directly loaned from Latin.[1][2] Considering the attested argjand, a prothetic a- (compare Buzuku's ergjand) or contamination from the Italian term cannot be excluded.
