From Proto-West Germanic *andawliti, from Proto-Germanic *andawlitiz, equivalent to and- (facing) +‎ *wlite (countenance). Cognate with Old Norse andlit (Swedish anlete, Norwegian Nynorsk andlet) and Old High German antlizzi (German Antlitz).
