Etymology

edit

Uncertain. The second element is either lāc (action, sport, game), its suffixed form -lāc (-ation), or an alteration of another element in assimilation to the aforementioned. The first element is unknown. It may possibly be from Proto-Germanic *aikaną (to be furious, rage, be violent, terrorise), related to Old English ācol (frightened, terrified). Alternatively, it may be a back-formation from āglǣċa, possibly a derivative of Proto-Germanic *agalaitijaz (licentious, renegade, rogue).
