Borneo
English
editEtymology
editFrom Portuguese Borneo, probably ultimately from Sanskrit वरुणद्वीप (varuṇa-dvīpa, “island of Varuna”), therefore a doublet of Brunei.
Pronunciation
edit- (General American) IPA(key): /ˈbɔɹnioʊ/
- (Received Pronunciation) IPA(key): /ˈbɔːni.əʊ/
Audio (Southern England): (file) - (rhotic, without the horse–hoarse merger) IPA(key): /ˈbo(ː)ɹnioʊ/
- (non-rhotic, without the horse–hoarse merger) IPA(key): /ˈboənioʊ/
- Hyphenation: Bor‧ne‧o
Proper noun
editBorneo
- A Pacific island shared by Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia; the world’s third largest island.
- Synonym: Kalimantan
Usage notes
editBoth the terms Borneo and Kalimantan are used to refer the whole island, yet the differences are mainly dialectal (Borneo are used in all three countries; while the usage of Kalimantan is restricted into Indonesia, or referring to the Indonesian portion in the strictest sense). In the past, the latter term was also used in Brunei and Malaysia, mainly by left-wing political groups that were once supported by the Old Order (e.g. North Kalimantan Communist Party).
