Etymology

edit

From Portuguese Borneo, probably ultimately from Sanskrit वरुणद्वीप (varuṇa-dvīpa, island of Varuna), therefore a doublet of Brunei.

Pronunciation

edit

Proper noun

edit

Borneo

  1. A Pacific island shared by Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia; the world’s third largest island.
    Synonym: Kalimantan

Usage notes

edit

Both the terms Borneo and Kalimantan are used to refer the whole island, yet the differences are mainly dialectal (Borneo are used in all three countries; while the usage of Kalimantan is restricted into Indonesia, or referring to the Indonesian portion in the strictest sense). In the past, the latter term was also used in Brunei and Malaysia, mainly by left-wing political groups that were once supported by the Old Order (e.g. North Kalimantan Communist Party).

Borneo Kalimantan
Brunei The Indonesian portion
Malaysia
Indonesia The entire island

Etymology

edit

(This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium. Particularly: “From Portuguese?”)

The hamlet is attested as Klein Borneo in 1984. It was named after the island, presumably for its remoteness or the perceived unpleasant disposition of its inhabitants.
