Etymology

    From French Alger, from Arabic اَلْجَزَائِر (al-jazāʔir, the islands), plural of جَزِيرَة (jazīra, island), referring to the several small islands that once existed in the Bay of Algiers. Doublet of Algeria and Algeciras. For the New Orleans neighborhood, the name is ultimately uncertain.
